T Rexes Found to be 2.5 Billion and Appear to Have Hunted in Packs

Wed Jun 02, 2021 1:37 am

According to scientists, T rexes hunted in packs much like wolves do today. There were probably about 20,000 T rexes living at one time with 2.5 billion T Rexes living across generations. Very interesting find that will help with our understanding of these beasts.

I don't know who's smiling wider: my inner 6-year-old, or the producers of Jurassic Park.

This appears to be on the conservative estimate side of things. Especially if they hunted in packs. I would imagine there were quite a few more. I would also expect that the young were probably vulnerable to cannibalism and attack from other prey.

1 per 100 sq kilometers?
The models pointed to one dinosaur for every 100 square kilometers (38.6 square miles). They estimated T. rex roamed over about 2.3 million square kilometers (888,000 square miles), and the species existed for about 2.5 million years.

From that, the team calculated a standing population size of 20,000. Over a total of about 127,000 generations, each lasting about 19 years, about 2.5 billion individual T. rexes lived overall.

Marshall pointed out that uncertainties in the estimates are large. The actual number of tyrannosaur rexes living at any one time could be as few as 1,300 and as many 328,000. That means that over the lifetime of the entire species, there could have been anywhere from 140 million to 42 billion

Knowing how many there were at any one time, on average, is interesting, knowing how many there were across millions of years, not so much.

How many humans by that account ? How many apes ?

If we could know the number from fossils and deduct the average population, sure, but doing it the other way ?

But how do you define when a t-rex is a t-rex? I mean, it would have evolved from an earlier ancestor, but where is the boundary?

Humans obviously evolved from earlier apes, but it's not like one day humans turned up. It would have been a slow gradual evolution.

I do not think they made noises at all. It would not serve them as a communication tool and would only alert potential prey animals to their presence.

There are approximately 17 dead humans for every living one at this moment. We are a minority.
It’s perfectly natural to be surprised by something coming at you faster than light. You’d never see it coming anyway. . .

Simple: you can't. There an be passionate discussions at the fringes when it comes to deciding is it already enough species A to count as such, or be added to their ancestors.

If there was so many wouldn't we find more fossils?

We are lucky to find what we do find. 65-100 million years of sedimentation, erosion, land migration. Bones don't survive in open air, so we depend on bones buried in special "events" where they can be fossilized to find proof.

https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/how-are- ... ormed.html

Once remains are buried under sediment, their decomposition slows down due to a lack of oxygen, giving enough time for fossilisation to occur.

But dinosaurs lived on land, so how did they get buried quickly enough for some of them to fossilise?

Dr David Button, a dinosaur researcher at the Museum, says, 'Most of the dinosaur fossils we find are from animals that were living near to a lake or river.

'Some died shortly before the area flooded and covered their remains in mud and silt. Others were washed into a river by heavy rain.'

:checkmark:
These days science is quite surprised that we find that many fossils as we do, given the rare circumstances tha create them.
