Bangladesh GDP per capita higher than India, Pakistan

Wed Jun 02, 2021 9:46 pm

I didn't know that Bangladesh had made such economic strides in recent years. It's nice to hear about success stories originating from difficult places on the globe (like West Berlin, Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea in the 20th century).

South Asia Should Pay Attention to Its Standout Star

This month, Bangladesh’s Cabinet Secretary told reporters that GDP per capita had grown by 9% over the past year, rising to $2,227. Pakistan’s per capita income, meanwhile, is $1,543. In 1971, Pakistan was 70% richer than Bangladesh; today, Bangladesh is 45% richer than Pakistan. One Pakistani economist glumly pointed out that “it is in the realm of possibility that we could be seeking aid from Bangladesh in 2030.”

India — eternally confident about being the only South Asian economy that matters — now must grapple with the fact that it, too, is poorer than Bangladesh in per capita terms. India’s per capita income in 2020-21 was a mere $1,947.

Don’t hold your breath expecting India to acknowledge Bangladesh’s success: Right-wing figures in India are convinced Bangladesh is so destitute that illegal migrants from there are overrunning the border. In reality, Bangladesh is far richer than the depressed Indian states where Hindu nationalist politicians have been railing against Bangladeshi “termites.” It’s as if Mississippi were fretting about illegal immigration from Canada.

Actually it's odd that places like Mississippi and Louisiana are that poor, if you consider that so many famous, important cities are located at or near the fertile deltas of large river systems (Cairo, NYC, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, Saigon, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Rotterdam, etc.).

I didn't know that. Thanks for the info. Bangladesh seems to be benefitting from some stability. But be careful with these kinds of figures. The median income shows something different.
Bangladesh: 567
Pakistan: 480
India: 616

So for the average Joe, you are more likely to receive a higher wage in India, than in Bangladesh. Pakistan is indeed lagging behind. The income inequality in Bangladesh seems to be much greater than in India. But, nevertheless, very interesting that Bangladesh is developing itself. The average number of children per woman is also quite remarkable:
Bangladesh: 2.1
Pakistan: 3.53
India: 2.28

If you look at the demographic figures, you mind find part of the explanation of its success.

Young population with a growing number of people starting working, thus more economic activity. Anyhow, good to hear of their success.

One of the most densely populated countries on earth, Bangladesh is the rising star in the sub-continent.

They have successfully kept religious extremists away from state institutions and focused on infra and economy. The results are there for everyone to see. Hope the 2 South Asian brats India and Pakistan learn from this. But will they?

India is pretty much a lost cause at this point. But Pakistan still has some hope left. The Pakistan Army is much more amenable at this point to keeping Communal elements at bay but the civilian Govt of Imran Khan is once again repeating the mistake of flirting with extremist elements. Big Mistake!

I don't have full knowledge on the topic but it appears Bangladesh is doing what India did in the 90s. Focus on strengths.
