Re: Euros 2020 thread

So today we had the first two quarter finals. It would be hard to imagine two more different games.

Switzerland vs Spain
Generally a poor game. Lots of possession for Spain but so little penetration. Spain's goal was a wicked deflection that left Sommer stranded. Then a bad defensive mistake by Spain gifted Switzerland their equaliser. Switzerland had Freuler sent off after 77 mins, but Spain couldn't break down a stubborn Swiss defence. We then had another 30 minutes of Spain trying but failing to find a way past the Swiss.

On to penalties, and much like the two hours that preceded them, they were poor with Spain eventually winning 3-1.

Belgium vs Italy
This game had everything that the first lacked. Played at a breathtaking pace by both teams, with Italy exerting more pressure, but Belgium looking very dangerous on the break. Italy scored first with a well taken goal after Belgium failed to clear. 13 minutes later and Insigne scored one of the goals of the tournament with a long run and shot curled into the top corner of the goal. Belgium looked out of it, but were given a lifeline on the stroke of half time when the ref gave a penalty for a push on the excellent Doku.

The second half was nearly as good as the first with long spells of exciting play. Slowly but surely, Italy took control of the match. Belgium had several close chances but couldn't get the ball in the net. In the end Italy were deserved winners and will now play Spain in the semi-final. Probably the best performance by any team so far. They will take some beating, although a bad injury for the excellent Spinazzola will be tough for Italy.

If Italy plays like that the rest of the tournament I don't see anyone beating them. Spain just lack that killer instinct in front of goal. So many shots but none really at all lethal except Alba's. This side of the bracket wins the championship in my opinion.

While I can't see Spain beating Italy (based on performances thus far), the one thing that Spain will do is to deny Italy the ball for long periods of time. It's certainly one to look forward to.

This Spanish squad is still very green. Italy will certainly punish those defensive mistakes.

I can't get over how good Italia's GK is. I was getting nervous when Gigi retired.

So today's two quarter-finals were:

Czech Rep vs Denmark
Denmark scored an early goal to take control of the game and doubled their lead with three minutes of the first half remaining. That looked to have put Denmark in complete control of the game, but the Czechs had other ideas. Scoring early in the second half meant the result was in doubt until the final whistle, but Denmark held on to reach the semi-final - something that looked an impossible dream after the Eriksen collapse and losing their first two games.

Ukraine vs England
Another game with an early goal - England taking the lead in the 4th minute. Despite several decent chances, England were unable to extend their lead and Ukraine created a couple of decent chances they were unable to take. England scored again very early in the second half and added a third four minutes later. Another goal was scored after 63 minutes and the game was long done as a contest. England reach their third semi-final in three tournaments. Somewhat surprisingly, they're the only team that haven't conceded a single goal.

So now we have two contrasting semi-finals:
Tuesday - Italy vs Spain
Wednesday - England vs Denmark

Third? Pretty sure it's two in a row. This Euro 2020, WC2018 so what's the other one?

The Nations League, which was set up to reduce the number of meaningless friendlies. England topped a group of Croatia and Spain to reach the semifinals, but they lost to the Netherlands after extra time.

Why are the semi finals and finals take place on Wembley when fans are not allowed to enter the UK due to COVID restrictions? Gives an unfair advantage to the home team in my opinion

It's somewhat unfortunate, but that's where they were always scheduled to take place. IIRC, Wembley was selected because it had the highest capacity of any of the stadia that bid to host games for this mad cap format.

You never know, maybe UEFA will finally start giving cards for schwalbes and stalling. In that case Italy would stand no chance.

You're looking at the wrong tournament.

England reached:
2018 WC semi-final
2019 Nations League semi-final (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018%E2%8 ... ons_League)
2020 Euro semi-final

2020 Euro semi-final

You're omitting that England are already out of the current 2020/21 Nations League. So that's 3 semis in the last 4 tournaments, or 2 major tournaments in a row. (Corrected your tourney timeline above).

What a surprise, it looks like the 2 teams most likely to make the final (well I guess Italy already has…) are the 2 teams that basically didn’t have to travel. Italy had to go to London and Munich, and England have gone to Italy and back home.

What a sham of a competition because of the messed up travel.

Spain probably played their best game of the Euros vs. Italy today - but again their bad finishing really cost them. And contrary to previous games, Morata actually put in a decent performance and scored the goal that sent it to extra time... that said, this is a much younger Spain team than what we've been used to seeing so there's a lot of promise ahead for them.

That said, no team has played better than Italy in the Euro and they showed that they have what it takes to win it all, even if it's ugly.

Pretty much. This is a very young squad, and a very ballsy move by Luis Enrique to put together a young team.

I think it will pay in the end if he can hold the squad together and have them grow as a team.

That said, congrats to Italy. They played the game pretty much the way they planned it and it worked out. Automatic favourites for the final, no matter if it's England or Denmark.

If England make the final...

I'm sure the coach's and tacticians have a game plan for Italy. Personally I still think there is more to come from this England side, and we saw glimpses of that against Ukraine.

My only worry is that Italy will "ham" it up a little and start acting and diving all over the place and the Ref will fall for it.

England were the better team, but that was a soft penalty call. All in all, yes, I'd say England deserve to be in the final. But Italy are, in my view, still the team to beat in this Euro... no doubt it'll be an interesting final.
