Operation Trojan Shield

Tue Jun 08, 2021 6:17 pm

800 CRIMINALS ARRESTED IN BIGGEST EVER LAW ENFORCEMENT OPERATION AGAINST ENCRYPTED COMMUNICATION

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Dutch National Police (Politie), and the Swedish Police Authority (Polisen), in cooperation with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and 16 other countries have carried out with the support of Europol one of the largest and most sophisticated law enforcement operations to date in the fight against encrypted criminal activities.

Since 2019, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation, in close coordination with the Australian Federal Police, strategically developed and covertly operated an encrypted device company, called ANOM, which grew to service more than 12 000 encrypted devices to over 300 criminal syndicates operating in more than 100 countries, including Italian organised crime, outlaw motorcycle gangs, and international drug trafficking organisations.

Europol press release

A big whoopsie for the person who introduced this within a crime syndicate. A big scoop by law enforcement all over the globe.

Raise your hand if you thought this topic was going to be about rubbers.

I'm afraid the possibility did cross my mind.

Were there not rumors that the EncroChat/EncroPhone platform was created with the blessing/help of law enforcement for the same reasons?

Just a tad disappointed that Archguy didn't get the scoop on this one first.

Report here, apparently six law enforcement officials included in the arrests, did not specify where though the reporter who mentioned it was in the US.

The interesting thing about this is that it's going to undermine criminals' confidence in ANY encryption service. No doubt thousands of mobile phones have been quickly dumped.

AU and NZ international travel was very restricted over last year, how did they manage to smuggle drugs.

Most of the VPN services are operated by government shell companies, so does most of the dark web.

Moral, Don't do crime if you don't want to do time.

So you are a smart criminal, who are you gonna trust, only yourself, anything else exposes you to justice.

Also I think this is the last time police can use this trojan, they are wise now

That is one goal. Make it so criminal organizations are more paranoid and thus remain smaller.

Not a new feeling.
Remember that Swiss "trojan" encryption company subverted over decades by US and German intelligence services?

Or go the other way. Why both Iraq and Afghanistan were so much bloodier, they knew they couldn't compete with the Americans so they went to traditional ways of doing things, using pigeons and what not for which the U.S. had no answer. How do you know if a pigeon is trained or untrained or if it's going long-distance or short distance etc. etc.

Criminals will find other ways and means of doing things. I don't believe that due to more policing things have changed. Just a look on the dark web tells you that it is as wild as it ever was.
