Keystone Pipeline Officially Dead

Wed Jun 09, 2021 10:49 pm

Parent company has decided they have had enough and has cancelled the Keystone Pipeline project. It's been a 10+ year battle with all sorts of environmental groups, most notable a Native American tribe in North Dakota who put up a huge fight to stop the pipeline. Most folks didn't know that it was only going to transport Canadian oil to the Gulf of Mexico and would lead to very few permanent jobs.

It was a bad idea from the start. TC did not really do their due diligence on the proposed routings and that set them up for environmental and cultural opposition from day one.

There's need to balance the consideration between local environment and global environment?

Given the challenges facing Native American communities, that expectation is a bit too high.

Good riddance. With all the money it would have made, and given Canada's rather "generous" geography, you'd figure they could have planned a route around the sacred burial grounds as opposed to through them?

I’ve heard of the jobs argument; if I’m not mistaken a lot of the jobs would have only been temporary. I don’t believe maintenance was to be job-heavy.

Besides the environmental impact (parts of the pipeline already in use have leaked) this was a Canadian project to deliver Canadian tar sands to an internationally owned refinery to sell oil on the open market. One of the biggest arguments in favor of this project is it would make America energy independent. How exactly?
