Antarctica Possibly First Discovered by Maori

Sat Jun 12, 2021 1:12 am

New research suggests that Antarctica was first discovered by the Maori people in New Zealand in the 7th century AD. In 1820, the first Europeans to discover Antarctica stumbled on the Fimbul Ice Shelf. Will be interesting to see who actually first discovered Antarctica.

Considering that the Maori weren't even in New Zealand at the time, that's pretty good.

Interesting. As with anything from oral traditions, you need to take them with a grain of salt. From the article: "They write that Māori and Polynesian journeys to the deep south have been occurring for a long time, perhaps as far back as the seventh century, and are recorded in a variety of oral traditions."

But very interesting nevertheless, The waters around Antarctica are very tratious. Would be quite a feat to navigate them with small boats.
