Florida Governor -Moment of Silence in School for Prayer

Wed Jun 16, 2021 11:37 am

https://www.news4jax.com/news/local/2021/06/14/desantis-signs-bill-to-require-daily-school-moment-of-silence/

“‘ “The idea that you can just push God out of every institution and be successful, I’m sorry, our Founding Fathers did not believe that,’ DeSantis said, shortly before signing the measure behind a placard that read ‘protect religious liberty’”.

I think someone is confused about the founding fathers again. Yes, let’s waste everyone’s time regardless of belief. I’m glad for DeSantis’ quote. Leaves no illusions for his motivations.

Keep religion out of public schools - if parents want a religious environment in school, they can pony up for private schools catering to that. This is such a waste of time. The language of the bill also makes teachers jobs harder since they are providing 1-2 minutes of reflection time, but students may not disturb other students in that time. Students inevitably will goof off and such when they think this notion is a joke, so this will eat up additional time dealing with those who were disturbing others.

I grew up in Gwinnett County, Georgia, which at the time was on the edge of suburban/exurban development. The elementary school I attended had a "Moment of Silence," every morning. But we said nothing about prayer. So when I first saw DeSantis signed this bill I thought ok fine, been there done that, it wasn't a major issue, but now he's stepped in it and invited a court challenge, that the (lowly taxed!!!) citizens of Florida will have to pay for. But hey...he's a #GG!!! (Great Governor!)

What is so wrong with a moment of silence? Do whatever you want with it.

His statements extend into religion. Which is kind of an Establishment Clause issue...

It's also a waste of valuable tax payer dollars for public education. The kids can pray at home.

This is just more pandering to special interests and religious deities that flies directly in the face of Desantis's baseless opposition to CRT.

The pockets must run deep for the supporters of this corrupt politician and the GOP in the state.

A moment of silence is not, a moment for prayer, maybe.

Thanks to his signing ceremony today, it can now be shown in court that the intent was religious. Thanks for playing.

How odd that the deep pockets of religion in Florida never did a damn thing when the state was busy protecting Jeff Epstein. :scratchchin:

I wonder how many instances it will take, of young people dropping to one knee in the class and holding their fist in the air, until this thing gets amended...

No , but it is a waste of time for students that need education rather than silence.

Good luck with that argument, given what the governor himself stated:

“The idea that you can just push God out of every institution and be successful, I’m sorry, our Founding Fathers did not believe that,” DeSantis said, shortly before signing the measure behind a placard that read “protect religious liberty.”

Other comments, aside from this just being stupid from the get-go:
1.) If you need to pray each day, do it at home before you get to school, or join a private religious school.
2.) Some people do not pray in silence. Will it be acceptable to pray out loud?
3.) Enforcing a moment of silence does not, in fact, "allow for religious freedom". Religious freedom already exists.
4.) As Aaron747 stated, good luck to teachers who have to enforce this.

Jesus specifically calls out the hypocrites who pray conspicuously in public. Not only is DeSantis lousy at respecting church-state separation, he's also lousy at being a Christian.

Voluntary prayer is not unconstitutional. Denying it could be argued as violating the first amendment. A moment of silence is just that, reflecting on whatever the individual wants. Queue Hugo Black.

It is a disgrace, as some snowflakes from religious families will feel their rights are shortchanged when there is an overriding school function.
It's direct interference of the Church and state as directly referenced by what Desantis said when signing the order, and where he signed it.

Nice deflection. Perhaps you should pay more attention to what DeSantis actually said, and where. Public schools permit prayer outside of instructional time and students can organize religious groups or clubs as they please. No need to pretend they can't. Plus there's the matter of Engel v. Vitale, which you somehow didn't cite.

Can't wait for a Muslim kid to try to pray during that moment.

Yup. That's exactly what'll come up in court. For a Harvard-educated lawyer, DeSantis doesn't impress.

So what is the big deal? Geez, move along. Let the kids pray to God, Yaweh, Alah, the Sponge Bob Square Pants light, or just thinking about getting laid after class.

State sanctioned religion, what part of that don't you get? If he had just left it alone as a moment of silence it would've been fine, but he didn't.

It isn't state sanctioned if it is a moment of silence. It isn't that any particular religion is getting the nod. To do with that moment whatever you want. Whatever, they aren't mentioning God or anything in the time. That the Gov did, so what? Relax.

The problem is, when people like DeSanits say things like "religious liberty" they mean their brand of Christianity. I want to see Muslim children taking a moment of silence just to watch DeSantis and people like him freak out and start revealing their true selves.

I think you'll find that the vast majority of "Christians" in the county are lousy at being Christian.

Once again, a Republican politician cheaply pandering to 'religious' voters. If politicians like DeSatan (yes, the spelling is intentional) were real persons of faith, they would be making sure all have access to health care, good social welfare programs, help the poor, protect the environment, not be racists.

Will do.

Your reply, extender, speaks volumes. Non-Christians in the United States have to live by a different set of rules than Christians. Christians, especially Republicans and definitely MAGAs, keep brining up "religious liberty" as the reason behind restrictive and draconian laws. Oh, and, let's not forget that Republicans were outraged over Ilhan Omar and Rashida Talib. Religious liberty and all that.

But we can not have a Muslim governor because 9/11 and terrorism somehow...

Well reading the bible is antifa critical race theory socialism and we can't have that

You don't make laws for "voluntary reflection"

If it's no big deal then WHY THE LAW?!?!?

It's directed at the low IQ voters who seal clapped at the evangelical messiah holding a bible upside down in front of a church after violently tear gassing protesters to do so (for a totally unrelated reason wink wink). Nothing new under the sun.

Naturally, but devoting time to instruction is in the mandate of public education.
