IntelliDrive

Thu Jun 17, 2021 5:26 am

Just switched to Travelers Auto insurance from Allstate for quite a significant savings

They have a program where you gain further savings if you agree to participate in ‘IntelliDrive’ for 90 days

Basically you download an app onto your phone and it monitors your driving habits through GPS tracking, acceleration, speed, braking, even time of day is recorded for an overall score

Not something I was inclined to do at first, big brother and all that but even without this program the savings are worthwhile to switch companies and you can turn it off / opt out at any time

Anyone participated in this program or something similar?

Liberty Mutual has a similar program. When my daughter started driving, she used it for 90 days. Dropped her quote by 30%.

At the end of the 90 days, we sent the unit back and deleted the app.

Here in France there are insurances that do that, but you have to install a tracker into your car, it's not through a smartphone (your could shutdown when you want to drive badly).

The only advantage is if you have a very bad driving record, with accidents etc., and no insurance wants you, then there is this possibility.

For me it would be maybe 10% cheaper, not worth being tracked.

Court dynamics of liability is likely to mean that most cars will be insured by the manufacturer as auto-pilot/FSD take over more and more of the tasks of driving safely. They will monitor the car and its drivers. What the US needs are privacy rules limiting what the manufacturer does with the data (as is also the case with other gatherers of data).

I had Progressive snapshot for 8 months. First two months used their app, it is a pos, it recorded me on a bicycle in park as a road trip.

Even with the plugin device its hard braking detection is flawed, it is based on deceleration faster than 7 miles/second, even in slow moving construction traffic I got hard brake warning.

Returned it once I got the discount.
