A ransomware attack paralyzed the networks of at least 200 U.S. companies on Friday, according to a cybersecurity researcher whose company was responding to the incident.

Criminals targeted a software supplier called Kaseya, using its network-management package as a conduit to spread the ransomware through cloud-service providers.

The privately held Kaseya says it is based in Dublin, Ireland, with a U.S. headquarters in Miami.

The "cloud" is a dangerous place sometimes.

I'm not an IT guy but it feels like companies and governments worldwide still have huge mountains to climb regarding data security.

Better security is only half of it. The perpetrators need to be found and prosecuted. If their country's government stonewalls it, they are complicit.

It's whack-a-mole...every new security tool developed has someone developing a workaround almost immediately. They are a lot better at catching moles exporting snippets of code to bad actors though.

I'm in IT but not security, don't know this company. Apparently what they do is security, so I would expect them to go bankrupt now...

In case my neck of IT disappears (which it probably will, replaced by automation) I know I can always train to work in security...

They offer different kinds of software services/solutions like checkout cashier system. Swedish food store chain Coop have been affected since their checkout system (cloud based I think) is from Kaseya, and many/most coop stores have been forced to close since they cannot process payments.

We are already on the peak in terms of security spending, results are still at base camp.

you cannot eliminate hacking by arresting them all just like you cannot eliminate thefts and kidnapping by arresting all the criminals
