US Women's National Soccer Team Loses Equality Case

Wed Jul 07, 2021 5:13 pm

The team have been very vocal about how bad their deal is compared to the men's team. They even garnered support from Biden saying that if they didn't receive equal pay then he would defund other soccer (likely the men).

This video seems to include a whole host of facts that the women did not make clear and seems to show that they rejected a deal similar to the men's in favour of one of their own:

I have no reason to believe that the facts presented in the video or wrong and, if true, these women have, IMHO, a lot of harm to the "equality" debate.

1. Football not soccer
2. The US women's national team is way better/more successful then the men's team so yeah they should be paid equal too or even more then the men's team.
The women's team have 4 world cup titles and 4 Olympic golds. What have the men's team won? The answer is a bronze medal 90 years ago.

1.) I'm British. I know what we call it, but they call themselves a soccer team.
2.) Did you actually watch the video? My thoughts were the same as yours until I watched it.

The women’s team were offered the same deal as the men’s team but they declined. The men’s offer was had more performance bonuses, the women didn’t want that they wanted a fixed payment, so that’s what they got, they screwed themselves over.

Despite substantial media pressure and allegations of discrimination and unfairness, the judge in the case ruled against the women players, and noted that they did not have a valid claim. It turns out that the women were in fact already paid more than the men ($220,747 per game for the women vs $212,639 per game for the men) despite the men's team generating more revenue than the women's team, and that the players filing suit were paid more than the four highest paid men's national team players. The judge also noted that the women were given the opportunity to accept the same contract as the men, and that the women's contract offered substantial benefits that the men's contract excluded, including a base salary, continuing payments to injured players, and severance pay.

Someone should apply the same logic to tennis, it’s ridiculous that women get the same prize money in the Grand Slams as men when they generate less revenue, put less bums on seats and spend substantially less time on court.

Exactly. The women were comparing what they DID earn for winning compared to what the men WOULD have earned had they won the World Cup (which just wasn't going to happen). On top of that, they were offered a similar deal which they turned down, so screwing themselves and then wanting the best of both worlds while claiming inequality is pretty ridiculous.

It would appear that their actual earnings WERE in fact higher than the men's team, just not as high as they would have been had they taken the same performance based pay risk as the men did rather than opting for guaranteed payments which they even claimed as a significant win for women's equality when they negotiated them. All covered in the video)

They shot too high, and banked entirely too much on the equality argument winning public favor, and that it somehow would lead to the court ruling for them.

The details really don’t make them out to be a likable bunch. They try to portray themselves as this scrappy, underpaid and overworked team. Reality is that for women’s football players, they are treated and paid far better than all of their peers.

This doesn't make sense to me. Success shouldn't matter. Skill shouldn't even matter. Like it or not, sports are a global business, and thus the team that brings in more revenue should be compensated higher. the end.

Before saying they're better let's have match with each team against each other, shall we ?

I was thinking the same thing. They are one of the best teams when compared to their peers. In most sports, men and women don't compete together because, low and behold, they are different. If you want to use the argument that you are totally equal then compete totally equally and there can be no complaints. Not too many women would make it into a mixed team in most sports though.

Regardless and as already written, it looks like they did get equal offers and decided to take the low risk, guaranteed payment option. They still earned more than the men by doing so, but not as much as if their pay carried the same risk as the men... but somehow that means they were treated unfairly.

There had there arses handed to them by a team of 15 year old boys. They have no chance against the men’s team, it would be utter annihilation.
