Monkeypox Cases in the United States

Sat Jul 24, 2021 4:28 pm

More than 200 people are being monitored by officials after being potentially exposed to an airline passenger from Lagos, Nigeria. Those people are located across 27 states and the virus has a three to 17 day incubation period. Will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Something like this couldn't have happened 50 years ago. The same vaccine that works to prevent Smallpox also works against Monkeypox.

1) Two currently available vaccines (DryVax and Jynneos) offer protection against monkeypox.
2) Multiple modeling studies have predicted that monkeypox cannot establish sustained transmission in humans. Multiple spillover events have occurred, but no sustained transmission has occurred.
3) This is a large dsDNA virus that mutates very slowly. It is unlikely to break into variants like an RNA virus.
4) Notice how we never heard anything else about this event? It's because not much came of it.

Thank you for your educated, rational answer.
