Heavy explosion, CHEMPARK, Leverkusen, Germany

Tue Jul 27, 2021 9:57 am

There was a hefty explosion in the BAYER chemical park in Leverkusen, Germany. A hazardous waste incinerator has popped. No information regarding damages or victims.

Source is in German. "Nice" mushroom cloud.

EDIT: Warning status is extremely dangerous. It seems the explosion was in the area of the tanks and the explosion was heard in distance of 20 km. Everyone shall stay inside and close the doors and windows.

Please note, it was a facility in the chemical park, but not a BAYER facility.

You're going to need more than an N95 mask for that stuff!!

What sort of stuff are they dealing with at that place?

In my old work I used to have some knowledge of old contaminated sites and a few of those had some frankly horrific stuff in them… extremely hazardous/deadly stuff.

But that was how things were in the old days. Now we are a bit wiser to those things.

As it seems the explosion was in the storage facility for liquid chemical wastes/tanks... Likely someone has mixed some chemical waste liquids by fault, who should never meet each other in one tank.
This was just one explosion and as there is no dark black or interesting colors in this mushroom cloud, perhaps someone has mixed acid with leach or so and produced a high amount of gas like N2 or CO2 or H2 (and boom, the tank has popped). The color is grey/white, looks just like H2O vapor.

But now there is a big fire on the tank storage area with much black smoke (it already starts during the explosion, just next to it); it is likely, now the bad stuff is on fire and there are some nice interesting chemical reactions going on and some nasty chemical compounds produced.

Update, it is still not known, what and why there was the explosion. Chlorinated solvents were later on fire. Numbers of hurt/dead/missing have not changed. 16 hurt, two of them serious. 1 dead, still 4 missing. The explosion was at the CURRENTA facility on the ChemPark area.

This is tragic (as I open my Bayer flea and tick collar for my dog wondering if there will be any supply in 8 months when it is due again for replacement...).

We shoved a lot of hazardous manufacturing to China, but there is a limit. RIP to the dead and their families. I wish a quick recovery to the injured.

What does the plant make? When I search it seams to be gardening products, but I am not certain.

There are 60 different facilities on this ChemPark area. all of them have gone into the "safe status", so they have shut down.

This one facility has not produced anything, because it is the hazardous waste incinerator of this area. Seems one tank with chemical waste has popped (there is now a crater), a second one with Chlorinated solvents next to it was damaged and on fire. As there is an own fire brigade for this ChemPark, with several specialized fire engines, the fire was fast extinguished.

Update: 2 dead, 5 missing, 31 hurt, of the 5 serious.

I wouldn't want to be too close on the downwind side of that smoke plume
