I am glad Steve Burns found other gigs and has found his calling and speaks to us in that "in between" tone and helps kids from then. And some adults, apparently....

Hey, no fair. I just watched the Colbert clip and I'm about to go onto a work call in tears (I'm a little younger than Colbert, but did watch Steve on Blues Clues on rerun and VHS with my now 18yo)

The original program sought to break the fourth wall and speak directly with the preschoolers watching, engaging them with puzzles. I understand it was hugely popular in the US, and had a good run in my country too.
But they suddenly changed the main non-cartoon character, with little explanation - "off to college, bye".
I think the impact has been so great because, in a time of upheaval, adults have been hauled back to their childhoods or early parenting in an unexpected way, but totally consistent with the delivery of the original show. And Steve's a real actual grown-up grown-up.

Instead of cutsie animated things telling us stuff, there was an actual human looking at us and helping us. His puppy, Blue, had issues and we all understood because Steve let us know. The whole thing is not revolutionary but it means a lot to a lot of people. I have no children and was a full grown adult when Blue's Clues premiered. We talked about it every week at work like it was a soap opera. The whole thing connected with people for many reasons.
I still use basic sign language because of the show.
