I think he killed himself and a Gator found his body and he hoped he wouldn't be found. I can't see any human (I don't care how guilty) want to be attacked by a gator and face that level of pain willingly.
Someone probably knows more than me but Gators don't actively hunt humans. They will attack one who protrudes on their habitat but I don't think they hunt humans because their bodies are more for quick explosive actions and on land they aren't particularly fast.
Correct, we are much larger than their preferred prey. They might scavage off a carcass depending on how limited their food resources have been.
