Volcanic eruption on La Palma, Canary Islands

After an earthquake swarm that started on Sept. 11, it appears that a volcanic eruption has started on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. There's about 4 or 5 vents that have opened up so far.

Nice fissure vent, let us see how it will end. Will we see one or two single vents or a line of vents or will is stay a fissure vent....

Garden chair, popcorn, cold beer and big bottle of sun blocker during day. And nice view/videos over night....

Looks like a balasmic eruption with lava flows but I am sure many but this volcano is a tsunami threat to the US Eastern Seaboard. Thankfully these type of eruptions don't often cause land collapses.

yeah, a very nice to look at from a distance, quite the spectacle.... except of course if you just lost your home.

If the collapse was on the western flank, why would Portugal, (which is to the East) be affected?.

The landslide would displace water in all directions the only place that may be protected is the areas to the immediate west. Next time you are near a pond throw a stone into it and watch the ripple, it will go in all directions and continue even if there was a rock in the middle of the pond.

There is also a doomsday tsunami not many people know about relating to the SW flank of the big island of Hawai'i, known as the Hilina slump.

One thing that really surprised me is how loud a volcanic eruption like this is, really loud booms and bangs.

Thanks! That's amazing how the lava flow eventually just goes under the surface. I had been looking for Govt. drone footage that showed exactly what this video showed. I remember well the aerial footage from the 2018 Hawaiian eruption. It was particularly spectacular at night.

I'm glad no life was lost, although the homes are gone.

Volcano was pretty quiet today but since maybe 30-60 minutes ago it's back as full strength throwing lava plumes high up into the sky.
The smaller side vent re-opened now and has lava floating out of it.

Lava will flow over the ground surface initially, then after some time it's surface will form a crust but the lava will still be flowing freely underneath that crust.

Oh, okay, I see. So all the times the networks showed live, fires burning homes in California, and homes being swept away by flood waters, and by hurricanes, were not taking the high ground. I'm impressed!! (Not really)

People were complaining about having to watch their life's work getting destroyed on video. That's also a reason why private drone flights have been banned.

However in this case, there was no real danger to the house. The lava flow actually passed it on the right. The telephoto lens "compresses" the view.

They're filming the vents most of the time, so it's to be expected that they won't stop at any other place for too long.

This is the position of that house in OSM, where much of the lava flow has already been added. The thinner lava flows directly north and south of the house have only emerged in the last few days. The lava you see in that video (that was filmed from the northwest) is the main flow that runs further south of Calle Alcala.

Sunday and two more vents have opened up causing further lava flows. The ash is also causing problems for the local banana growers.

The house shown in these pictures, situated north of Calle Alcala, had survived until yesterday, but last night it was buried under the large amounts of lava that were released when part of the volcanic cone collapsed.

This comparative map is often updated with new drone shots of the lava stream and now shows hot lava where that house was standing.

Thanks for the map! That really helps to see just how small an area is affected. To me it had felt like the whole island was involved but I see it is a few tens of square miles. Still devastating to those affected of course.

Ground deformation and earthquakes are picking up again. I'd assume more magma is entering the system than is currently being erupted.

Im currently on La Palma and went yesterday to see the Volcano. Its a truly unique experience and the noise is like nothing else. Quite a few tourists but way down on what would normally be here. Its mostly Spanish from the Peninsula and other Canary Islands.

The sounds is indeed amazing - years ago I was in the vicinity of Volcan Arenal in Costa Rica during an eruptive phase and at one point I would have sworn we were near an airport and a 737 was departing, but is was just steam and ash venting - one of the coolest things I have ever witnessed

It was quite active last night and this morning I woke up and balcony covered in ash. At 8:02am we had a small 3.5 earthquake which rattled the doors .
