M6.0 Earthquake Near Melbourne, Australia

Wed Sep 22, 2021 5:10 am

A bit of a rarity here - a magnitude 6.0 has struck about 200 km NE of Melbourne. Fairly shallow quake initially measured at 10 km. Some reports of light structural damage but no injuries or deaths so far.

According to Geoscience Australia's risk map, the location is somewhat outside the area of Victoria considered to be most at-risk.

It gave us a good shake, the strongest earthquake that I've felt. This was all that we needed, with lockdown, protests/riots & now an earthquake...

Not a whole lot of damage, the Chapel Street shopping strip seems to have faired the worst, with some shops suffering damage. Things would have been worse if we weren't in lockdown. Very lucky, could have been much worse if the epicentre was closer to Melbourne. Also felt as far away as Sydney, Adelaide & Launceston in northern Tasmania.

The city being in a Covid related lockdown has meant that, where the limited structural damage has occurred, there have been few or no injuries. Chimneys knocked over and minor structural damage only.

There have been 6 aftershocks so far, all less the original quake. Some parts of Sydney (1000km away) felt the original quake.

Not surprised MEL got such a good jolt even at that distance from the focal point - seems like most of the core of the city is on an alluvial plain. Pretty bad soils for absorbing earthquake waves.
