I would like to know, what is your favorite SSD?
I have a 1TB SK Hynix Gold P31 M.2 NVMe SSD in my desktop, and plan to install that same model SSD in my HP Pavilion laptop when the warranty expires this November. It seems to provide good performance for the price, and one thing that sold me on it in the case for my laptop is the performance per watt ratio.

Samsung 980 pro or WD SN 850, you really can't go wrong with either of them.

Of course, if your motherboard doesn't support PCIe 4.0, no point in buying a PCIe 4.0 SSD since it will run at PCIe 3.0 speeds.

True, but when it comes down to it, with the performance of modern computing, you're going to end up skipping a couple of generations of cpu/gpu/HD/mobo. There was a time when I was constantly (like every couple of months) upgrading my main computer, now I buy a new one every 2-3 years. By next year my set up will be considered middle of the pack, but still compared to a 2018-19 era computer it will be blazingly quick.

I have a 1TB 2,5” 970 Evo Samsung as the boot drive in my Mac Pro 5,1 and a pair of 1TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMEs on a Sonnet sled connected to the X16 PCI-e slot.
My other Mac has a standard 1TB Apple SSD:
It’s more difficult to add more drives to that computer because it is the round trash-can Mac Pro. It can be done with it internal adapters or just use external drives.
The Samsung drives on the Sonnet card run at incredible speeds. The 2010 Mac with that setup is really fast. And that little trash-can Mac is even quicker again! Some of the stuff you can make it do, that little machine just behaves like it is nothing!
The 2010 Mac is easy to add more storage. I could have easily 4 NVME SSDs and 5 2.5” SSDs, all internal. Just a matter of how much you want to spend!

Sadly for Mac fans, there is a known incompatibility with the SK Hynix controller in the P31 Gold that makes it incompatible with Macs.

I got a new portable one to store off media . The USB-C speed and non moving parts makes these so much better than the old disk based storage.
I got the 1 TB T5 from Samsung. So nice.

As for the SK Hynix Gold P31, I got it specifically for its performance to watt ratio, which is important for laptops. Due to its decent price I decided to get the same model for my desktop.

Also, if anyone was interested in upgrading, keep in mind for laptops that some laptops cannot fit double-sided M.2 SSDs due to clearance issues.

I would be interested in hearing about high-performance gaming chips that don't generate a lot of heat (by consuming little power).
Because my current laptop, when in gaming mode, makes the sounds of a vacuum cleaner.

The performance to watt ratio of the SK Hynix Gold P31 is what sold me on it. The SK Hynix Gold P31 is a great choice for a laptop in the case of Gen3; Amazon right now has it on sale. Most laptops right now don't support Gen4 SSDs (they would be limited to Gen3 speeds), and Gen4 SSDs tend to run quite hot anyway.

Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus. Comes with the option for a 4TB capacity drive, plenty fast, and well priced for a PCI-E 4.0 SSD. But I also like Samsung 980 Pro's, and WD's Black SN850's.

The 980 seems good. I have two of them.
Although the naysayers reckon they won’t work in the 2010 Mac Pro, I’ve got them running on a Sonnet controller card and get 4800mb/sec out of them in RAID0 or 3000mb/sec on their own. With another two of them and putting three together as raid0 I think the speed would be faster still, but Apple don’t support booting from raid0 so you set 1 on its own for boot purposes. Or set all four NVME as a raid0 then use a normal 2.5” SSD for the boot drive and the NVME as your working drive.
I installed Big Sur 11.2.3 on one 980 Pro tonight as part of a test to try and see why Monterey and Big Sur 11.6 won’t work on the 2010 Mac Pro I have.
It’s trial and error but it means the 980s aren’t the fault.
Looks like a boot up deadlock between two processes caused by the older Westmere Xeons that don’t support a particular feature.
I’m getting quite savvy at digging in the backend of Mac OS.
Letting the Mac OS installer migrate all my data from the old 970 SSD to the 980 Pro NVME took no time at all. In the old days that would have taken hours!

I am getting S.M.A.R.T. warnings for my secondary Seagate Barracuda Pro HDD in my desktop; this could be a sign that it could be failing. This used to be my primary drive in my desktop and is now my secondary drive (the SK Hynix Gold P31 NVMe SSD is now my primary drive). I might replace the Seagate HDD with an SK Hynix Gold S31 SATA SSD.

I use an 1 TB Kingston A2000 Nvme SSD as boot drive. an 2 TB Intel NVME for MSFS + an additional standard Samsundg 860 EVO 1 TB SSD for other games.

Anyway Samsung gets the seal of approval along with crucial.. I'd avoid the cheap Chinese ssds like the plague

On my old laptop I installed a Samsung 860 Evo. However, SK Hynix (who is also a South Korean company) seems to get good reviews and costs less than Samsung, which is one of the reasons why I am going with them for my newer purchases. In the case of my current laptop, the Gold P31 has one of the best performance to watt ratios, resulting in less heat and better battery life.

I got another Samsung 870 Evo 2TB to put in the second Mac Pro. Working fine with an install of Mac OS 11.6 and the OC 0.7.4 package.
Only other requirement was the OWC drive tray adapter to make it fit in the Mac Pro drive bays which were intended for old fashioned spinning HDDs.
I didn’t intend to buy 2TB but that was all that was in stock. Apple wouldn’t believe back in 2010 that these old workstations could or would be upgraded so far as people do now.
