Multiple social media platforms are zotzed

Mon Oct 04, 2021 7:44 pm

Saw a tweet from Merriam Webster that opened with "since Facebook and Instagram are both down..."

Checked my Facebook app and it seemed ok [EDIT: no it is not, my post whose entirety read "test" has still not successfully posted]; pulled up the CBS Radio News app to get the most recent hourly newscast and they said Instagram's home page is bannering something about a server error; also that there are now problems on TikTok but they did not give specifics.

At the moment Twitter is mostly working but I'm getting a lot more "Failed to load Tweet" errors than normal, even if so far they get fixed via retries.

Multiple independently owned platforms getting zotzed at the same time while the rest of the Web is untouched obviously reeks of cyber attack. In turn one is made to wonder whether China's military exercise over Taiwan is related.

(Whatever is actually going on, in less than twelve hours someone will have elaborately claimed that it's Biden's fault.)

Already seen that, from people I know both on the right and the left. From the right, Biden is letting his "censorship pals" get "away with this with no ramifications" (whatever that even means) and from the left it is because he hasn't broken up Facebook. Fun times.

In all seriousness, I'm currently unable to get my work done for the day. I work remotely and have been able to get anything not dependent on others done, or in cases where I have proper email addresses for those I need to speak too, bu It still have a few tasks left where I need to talk to people that I only have whats app contact information for. Really a pain, although it is nice to stroll through A.net during a workday I guess.

I joined a Facebook group this morning.

Next time I tried to Facebook, it was down.

Related? You decide.

No further reports of problems on the non-Facebook-owned platforms.

I now believe that what small problems there were had something to do with significantly increased traffic to those sites due to the desperation of some to feed their soc med appetites.

The social media platforms were down most of the day.

Left most of my employees with nothing else to do but their jobs today :sarcastic:

Pretty impressive downtime for mission critical network functions. Seems like their data center folks get to don the hero hat today.

IMHO Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if they never came back online...

They have a pretty robust infrastructure - it's going to take more than an update gone bad.

Any entertaining conspiracy theories as to why they went down yet? :duck:

There were two -

https://edition.cnn.com/2021/10/03/tech ... 0-minutes/

One of the theory which did the rounds is that the company did this to destroy evidence of what Frances Huagen said. Then there was also Sophie Zhang who had shared similar concerns bud din't have documentary proof of what she shared.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... phie-zhang

I do remember the Congress hearing where Mr. Zuckerberg ventilated between 'I don't know' to 'I don't remember' for all the questions asked by people on both sides of the political spectrum. And then, later of course vowing to do better. I did notice that people on the right didn't ask any tough questions as it is big business. Their only concerns were jobs but that's about it. No questions on data privacy or anything else :(

Maintenance error caused Facebook's 6-hour outage, company says

https://www.investing.com/news/stock-ma ... ge-2635441

(Reuters) - An error during routine maintenance on Facebook's network of data centers caused Monday's collapse of its global system for more than six hours, leading to a torrent of problems that delayed the repairs, the company said on Tuesday.

The outage was the largest that Downdetector, a web monitoring firm, said it had ever seen. It blocked access to apps for billions of users of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, further intensifying weeks of scrutiny for the nearly $1 trillion company.

Errors during routine maintenance have caused lots of snafus in the past...

I guess, pay the maintenance people more money to do their job better.

Average pay for a server tech at a Facebook data center in the US is $121K
