Five people have been killed and two others seriously injured in a bow and arrows attack in Kongsberg, Norway.

It was reported the suspect began firing in a supermarket at around 6.30pm before heading out into the town and apparently firing at strangers.

Two other people were wounded and hospitalised in intensive care, including an officer who was off duty and inside the shop where the attack took place, police said.

Police said a 37-year-old Danish citizen, living in Kongsberg, has been charged and held in custody in Drammen on Wednesday night.

The police chief in the town of Kongsberg said there was “a confrontation” between officers and the assailant, but he did not elaborate.

“The man who carried out the act has been arrested by the police, and there is no active search for more people. Based on the information we have, there is one person behind this,” Police Chief Oeying Aas said.

From the news on TV this morning the Danish citizen is suspected to be a former ISIL fighter returned from the Middle East. His weapon was a hunting bow.

My bad, I am just amazed he managed to kill so many people without using a gun. I thought the poster above said "shooting", so he might have used something else to shoot other than a gun.

The OP stated it was a bow. This is just another example that if you really want to kill people, you'll find a way. Whether a bow, a vehicle, a bomb, there's always a way.

I know those streets well. It is fall, dark and misty last night, people walking around by themselves in narrow streets as easy targets. It is the old mining part of town, lots of 17-19 century industrial wooden buildings on a slope towards the river with knolls and trees. The surface part of the norwegian mining museum is in that street. Hiding-places galore. Once you step out of the streelights you are invisible.
Sounds like a movie scene, but thats what that area is like.

This in a small town with probably 2 police officers on duty. It is going to take a few minute for the helicopter from oslo to get there. They had him in about 30 minutes if I understand it correctly. Doesn’t sound unreasonable to me.

Only because you didn’t inform Norway about their NZ citizenship. I know people that didn’t know it was illegal before and have had their passport confiscated and involuntary «returned» to their «real» country.

He was also known for walking around mumbling racial slurs to himself, according to neighbours interviewed in the press today. He does seem like the kind of person that could’ve been easily recruited by any radical idea.

I stand corrected. I lived there 1996-2013 when it wasn't possible, and most Scandinavians probably want to keep their original citizenship anyway.

Denmark would be better served following the US approach encouraging all people to never go shopping, dining or worshipping without their bows locked and at the ready. I’ve been there and all the cyclists, cleanliness and socialist medical schemes were petrifying. After 3 days in Copenhagen i started feeling a sense of serenity and happiness. I cut my trip short and hurried back home. Nothing keeps you on your toes like your hometown murder rate. ‘Murica baby.

He visited a mosque 2 or 3 times in 2017, they haven’t seen him since and noted he didn’t know how to pray.
He was a paranoid- schizofrenic, arrested several times for threats against his parents, commited to mental care numerous times, never held a job and lived off of welfare for his entire adult life due to his psychiological illness. He was known to be walking around muttering racial slurs towards neighbours with different erhnic backgrounds.

There is a lot to be said about political islam, but it is a stretch to blame this entirely on that religion.

Norway has very low homicide rates. Not having an active self-defence gun culture plays an important part in that. There are very few guns out on the streets.
Police is not even armed, usually, and that gives «the bad guys» a lot less incentive to carry firearms. As a result. Crime involving death is rare.
However, lots of people do have guns.
Hunting is big. The army reserves in many cases have guns at home. We have 0.3 firearms per capita. Far away from the US 1.2, but still very high on the world ranking.

This one event in Norway is newsworthy and makes international news - 21 events in the US is just an average year. Thats how I know gun control works.

Yeah, badly written words on paper have caused a lot of deaths. Religious texts the most obviously. But the improperly worded 2nd Amendment really screwed the USA.

Children of NZ citizens are automatically citizens from birth, the Norwegian ban on dual citizenship came into play if you had to make an application for the second citizenship, my oldest child was born in NZ and automatically a kiwi, when we moved to Norway my wife applied for Norwegian citizenship for him, Norway has always known he was a dual citizen.
