Feasibility of Having a Tunnel Constructed Under Atigun Pass in Alaska

Thu Nov 25, 2021 12:44 am

Would it be feasible to have a tunnel built under Atigun Pass to make travel on the Dalton Highway there safer as the highway is a key supply route for the oil fields at Prudhoe Bay? Tunnels like this have been built under Loveland Pass in Colorado with the Eisenhower Tunnelbin 1973, Rohtang Pass with the Atal Tunnel in 2020, and the Punta Olympica Pass in Peru with the Punta Olympica Tunnel in 2013.

For tunnels like this it makes sense to just use a train tunnel boring machine and do a single lane. Alternate the traffic direction every hour. This is the only way to get a decent cost benefit analysis. Tunnel boring machines between 5m and 6m in diameter are cheap per mile of Tunnel. It would be possible to still get 4.2m of height clearance in a small diameter 5m tunnel. A 6m diameter tunnel should allow nearly all oversized loads.

If the main goal is to make the supply to oil fields safer and easier then it is a waste of money. We are trying to detox from fossil fuels as humanity :D

With production from the North Slope down 60 percent from it's peak, it's a little late for that tunnel.
