Munich, Germany, 01-Dec-2021. Bomb explosion, likely WW2 dud.

Wed Dec 01, 2021 1:32 pm

Near Munich main railway station at a railway construction site (part of the Munich main railways station construction site) was an expolosion today. First news are, workers have "found" a WW2 dud. 3 workers hurt, one of them serious.
Rail traffic is now stopped, this will affect half of Europe.

Glad that nobody has been killed, but how could a minor event like this affect half of Europe? :scratchchin:

It may affect train operations in parts of Germany and adjacent countries.

All national and international train traffic through Munich is stopped. Munich is one of the few main stations, where the main ICE routes will start and end, so the main routes Munich Berlin, Munich Hamburg and Munich Frankfurt, Munich Stuttgart Paris are now broken. Also the whole European train travel from France, Netherlands, Belgium, Dennark/Norway/Sweden goes through Munich as most to Prag, part of Stwitzerland, Hungary, Italy e.g.

The explosion of the bomb was just there, where the dozens of the railways come together/split just few hundred m in front of Munich main railway station.

Update: It was the explosion of a WW2 dud, 4 have been hurt, one of them serious, train traffic is running again. The main S-Bahn route is still stopped, the explosion was next to it, they are now verifying, if it was damaged.

It’s not even possible to take a train from Denmark/Norway/Sweden any further than Hamburg before needing a change, and the number of people availing themselves of cross-continent travel by rail is miniscule. So whilst it may effect “half of Europe”, the effect is so minute it almost can’t be measured. Particularly as we’re well outside the season for Interrail travel.

Just for comparison it takes 1,5 hours to travel from CPH to PRG by air, whereas it’s a +12 hour journey by train. With a change in Hamburg.

First thoughts, why haven't they checked for explosives. Munich was a prime target during WWII, with lots of unexploded ammunition there. Another grim reminder that wars have long aftermath, not just in the minds, but also physical.

Honestly, considering how many WWII bombs keep being found in Germany, it's actually surprising that this kind of situation doesn't happen much more often.

RIP to those who died.

RIP to the dead and my heart goes out to their families and the injured.

Considering the shear weight dropped, I too am surprised as the old explosives crystalize with water exposure and haven't been detonating. In particular as trains were a primary target.

Lightsaber
