Actor George Clooney rejected $35 Million to do ad for ME airline

Sat Dec 04, 2021 12:17 pm

US Actor George Clooney rejected an offer of $35 Million to do a 1-day filming of an advertisement for a Middle Eastern based airline. He said he did so as 'could sleep at night', after speaking to his wife who is a well know international human rights attorney. He further stated that while the country where the airline is based 'is an ally [of the USA], is questionable at times". I would presume this would have been for Qatar Airlines, based and named after a country to host the Football World Cup next year and with an appealing human rights record that preparations for the WC has seen many construction worker die in them. It is also a country where the USA has a major base to protect the Persian Gulf. https://news.yahoo.com/george-clooney-e ... 30790.html

I guess I misinterpreted his quote. I thought Clooney said he wants to be with family, and one day’s work for $35 million would simply be too much work for him, given his privileged and aloof lifestyle.

But if he is guarding his reputation versus Qatar, good on him. I don’t know enough about Qatar to say they are “beyond question” a reputable state. Few states are.

They are not. The GCC is a lion's den.

Clooney is likely one of the richest actors in today's 'Hollywood'. For sure he didn't need the money and can pick and choose his ways to make money. We do know of many 'celebrities' who would sell out of greed or too expensive lifestyles their soul to the devil for far less of a payout, including airlines connected with major labor rights issues or with countries with serious human rights issues.

Good for him. He understands that enough is enough. And that there are other considerations then just money.

I still remember Michael Schumacher back in his best days, pretending that a certain brand of deodorant made oh so happy (on multiple TV stations).....and I always wondered why--> did he really need that?

Curious, could you define and describe his “privileged” and more importantly his “aloof” lifestyle without adding the word liberal?

Given his spouse, Amal Clooney, is a British-Lebanese barrister, specialising in international law and human rights, that might be. a factor as well.

He has no problem selling himself out to Nestlé, which is involved in numerous scandals from Nigeria to California. What a hypocrite.

Possibly, then, "so he could sleep at night" just means "not on the couch."

He responded at the time and the company halted all the supplier agreements in Guatemala that caused outrage. What more would you like done?

Clooney was quoted as saying "‘Well, if it takes a minute’s sleep away from me, it’s not worth it.’”

If it takes a minute's sleep away from George, it's not worth $35 million. For one day's work. That is both privileged and aloof beyond most of our wildest dreams, but it is his life and he has a right to turn down the work.

His net worth is north of $500m...it's up to him to judge if he needs another big payday or not. Privileged, sure, but you and I are not being offered $35m to do an ad, much less offered ads to do at all. His comment didn't seem to be literally about sleep and length of work - more jest intended toward the source of the offer.

Also should probably look up what 'aloof' means...he has been pretty accessible throughout his career.

In fairness, that is virtually everyone you know. If gas is cheaper at a station that gets their product from the saudis, are you really going to do the research to find that out? And also stop going?

Obviously, no one here would have. But if you already controlled $500mio, you probably have the budgetary room for decisions like that.

In laymans terms I do believe it's called having F.U. money.

Do you realize you have really misinterpreted what he actually meant?

"Take's a minute's sleep away from me" has nothing to do with him dreading work and more to do about how he will not sleep comfortably from the guilt of being involved with a known human rights abuser.

Yep. A lot better than mine, which is still very much "I will probably do the job, but you are going to hear about it all day" sort of money

From my POV if he can afford to knock it back then the biggest FU would have been to accept the job and then donate the money to charity do a PR job on their PR job

Some people really need to do some research on Clooney, the guy is pretty down to Earth, yes he has made a lot of money, no crime there, he values his family over more money, something I wouldn't really wouldn't call privileged or aloof.

I’m sure you’ve been guilty of being a hypocrite at some point in your life. Celebrities are people, not gods. Do you expect them to know every single detail about all the companies they work with? Are we supposed to hold them accountable for every single mistake they make? The important thing is that he’s making the right decision now, yet you’re still bitching and complaining. For some it’s just never good enough. Just be thankful that people don’t hold you accountable and judge your entire character because of the boneheaded things you’ve done in the past.

The important thing is that he’s making the right decisions TODAY. Yesterday is irrelevant and the past is the past.

We don't know the exact conversation between George and Amal, do we? This whole thing came to light because of a lengthy interview in The Guardian (per the OP). George did not "run with this info to the media" but, rather, the interviewer did his/her homework. Given George's personality, I doubt we know about any other commercials or sponsorships he has turned down based on character.

Let's not forget that many countries and companies try to buy respect by paying stupid money for endorsements or participation in events by well known celebrities, sponsor foreign sports teams (like in professional soccer/football). At least some like Clooney have limits.
