Ukranian President Zelensky goes to Washington D.C.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/21/politics ... index.html

During the news conference, Biden told CNN’s Phil Mattingly that the missile system is defensive, not escalatory. Zelensky said the system is “something that will strengthen our air defense significantly.”

“Every dollar of this investment for the United States is going to be a strengthening of global security and I know that the American leadership will be strong and will play important role in global scope,” Zelensky added.

He also suggested Ukraine would want more of the systems.

So apparently there is news that Ukraine will be receiving front line tanks from western NATO-affiliated nations.
Primarily consisting of Leopard 2's (numbering 80 from various countries stocks), along with 30 M1 Abrams from the USA, as well as 10 (a number which as rumored may increase) Challenger 2's from the UK.

Kinda big news so I thought it should be posted here. ;-)

I don't have a subscription to NY Times.

I thought it was just 14 Leopard 2 from Germany and 14 from Poland.

Gerasimov is back in, replacing Surovikin, as the general in charge.

From the no doubt amateur Kremlinologists who don't even speak Russian at DoD comms:
Promoting General Gerasimov, U.S. and other Western military officials say, was intended to both deflect criticism of the war effort from the military bloggers and to check the rising power of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the mercenary group Wagner that has spearheaded the bloody Russian offensive at Bakhmut in the Donbas. Mr. Prigozhin has also been a staunch supporter of General Surovikin.

Not very sure what this means for the overall operational picture - probably nothing.

Ukraine has received its first Leopard 2's!

Though in country they can't be deployed yet obviously until more arrive to build an appropriate force, but this is faster than I expected. Good on Poland.

Other good news is that Germany is adding 4 more Leo 2's to what they are sending.
