In the US today the House of Representatives passed a resolution for an immediate cease fire and declared support for Ukraine's sovereignty. More of a feel good vote to voice support for the people of Ukraine, but at least is is public.

https://news.yahoo.com/house-passes-res ... 54814.html

The House passed a resolution on Wednesday to declare support for Ukraine's sovereignty in the face of the invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, while urging an "immediate cease-fire."

Lawmakers in both parties voted near-unanimously in favor of the resolution, 426-3. The only votes in opposition were from three Republicans: Reps. Paul Gosar (Ariz.), Thomas Massie (Ky.) and Matt Rosendale (Mont.).

U.S. Postpones Long Range Missile Test Amid Nuclear Tensions With Russia
https://time.com/6154110/icbm-nuclear-test-russia/

Didn't the Soviets almost launch a retaliatory strike in the 70's after Norway launch a small weather rocket? Prudent move - we should be keeping all our ships and aircraft a safe distance away so no mistakes are made. It is a good sign that Russia isn't sending TU-95's probing Alaska or East Coast ADZ.

Europe’s largest nuclear power station is on fire after Russian troops began to shell it early Friday, according to the mayor of a nearby industrial city.

Not good. Hopefully it is not the reactor core control systems.

A part of the nuclear power plant, claimed to be the largest facility in Europe, in the city of Enerhador, Ukraine, has been attacked and on fire. The complex does produce about 25% of Ukraine's electric power. The unit isn't active due to maintenance but does contain active nuclear fuel and some radiation has been detected. This is a very serious escalation of this war. God help us all. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/eu ... ar-AAUxvEY

AP - Sorting fact, disinformation amid Russian war on Ukraine

Associated Press journalists around Ukraine and beyond are documenting military activity during Russia’s invasion. With disinformation rife and social media amplifying military claims and counterclaims, determining exactly what is happening can be difficult. Here’s a look at what could be confirmed Thursday as Russia’s war on Ukraine was in its eighth day.

The US is openly calling the shelling of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plan a "war crime"

https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/ru ... -invasion/

Russia blamed Ukraine for the fire, calling it a "monstrous provocation," but the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv accused Putin of "a war crime" with what it said was the "shelling of Europe's largest nuclear plant."

The article touches more on Putin's continued gaslighting and misinformation, but that will be discussed in the other thread.

The paper writes that Zelensky survived three assasination attemps, because rogue FSB members tipped of the Ukranian intelligence agency. This includes assassination attempts by the Wagner mercenary group and by special forces from Chechnya.

Chief of the General Staff of Belarus has resigned:

https://twitter.com/quiraskill/status/1500391853635551233?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1500391853635551233%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.redditmedia.com%2Fmediaembed%2Ft7uuej%3Fresponsive%3Dtrueis_nightmode%3Dfalse

There is an English translation in the first reply. It's not immediately clear to me if the resignation is a result of his refusal to fight Ukrainians full stop, or because he doesn't think he can drum up the battalion needed instantly.

28 Mig-29 from Poland will go to Germany (Rammstein US base) and than to Ukraine. Seems to be agreed by German government, as originally deliverd from Germany (from DDR stocks) to Poland for 1 €. So Poland will now hand over all of the Mig 29 to Ukraine.

This is no time for CYA. If Poland has 28 Migs donated from German DDR stocks for 1 Euro why the hold up? Repaint them and tell Ukrainians they can have them for the same1 Euro, Why does Poland need to transfer to USA first? Can't Ukraine then can fly in the pilots from Ukraine to pick them up and fly back to Ukraine and carry on,

Interesting article in the Irish Times with comments by two former high-profile Russians, exiled in Ukraine. One is a former deputy in the Duma, and the other a top TV journalist from the '90s and '00s:

Ilya Ponomaryov, the former deputy, says of Putin:
“He is a scoundrel, a product of his difficult streetwise childhood, a petty street crook. Knowing who he is, I should have expected this war to come,” he says. "Many people were saying this [invasion] would be completely irrational . . . but Putin is a psychopath. He is not a rational man. He wanted to take over Ukraine and conquer Kyiv and raise the Russian flag over the city. This did not happen and now he is angry, bitter and wants revenge.”

Ponomaryov says he is “not sure that Russia as a country will actually survive what is going on right now” but he is certain that Putin and his regime of 22 years are doomed. He believes Putin could be ousted by protests that become armed and violent as poverty and anger grow, or that military defeat by Ukraine could lead to his removal. Another possible scenario, Ponomaryov says, is an assassination attempt by someone “not in Putin’s very inner circle, but someone who has access to him and is supported by businesspeople. “I think it is impossible that he will compromise [over Ukraine]. It’s not in his character. That’s why my forecast is that he will die soon – I don’t think he will survive the next new year.”

Yevgeny Kiselyov, the TV journalist says:
". . . a Kremlin coup as “plausible but very unlikely. They seem so afraid of Putin that they do not dare to act . . . Being afraid of him turned into a permanent habit of the Russian ruling elite a long time ago.”
