Gasoline prices, it hurts.

Sat Mar 05, 2022 7:39 pm

I live in Northern Ontario Canada. Well I just filled up my 2013 Honda Civic... $92.00

That's 1.84 a Liter folks, and with another carbon tax installment coming in April its gonna hurt even more. I cant wait to get my 2001 Honda Insight Hybrid out of storage, ya I will still have to pay to fill its 40L tank but I will get 800km out of that. Currently I get about 600km out of the Civic with the cold weather.

I feel sorry for some people that need there cars and trucks for there lively hood, I have 30min highway commute with no other options so it does affect my budget a bit. I know people that own pickups and commute to work and at that price its $230 to fill up. About 5-10min out of town are 4 gas stations on First Nations land and there prices are averaging $1.50L, last week I drove the 12km to save the $20.

How are prices in your area?
Are you thinking of switching to a more efficient car because of it?

I see its an average of 191 in Vancouver. https://www.caa.ca/gas-prices/

Gasoline prices, it hurts.

£1.55/litre here in the uk (2.60CAD). My car takes about 55gbp to fill up and does about 500miles (800km) with that driving to work or about 430 if doing the hills. My wife’s car (a mini) takes about 65 to fill and does about 500miles. The pickup (L200) takes about 80 to fill and goes about 400miles or 300 with a loaded trailer. Prices are high but I’m not too bothered at the moment, I think I’m in a very privileged position in many regards and complaining about fuel prices feels a bit like first world problems.

I passed my HGV (heavy good vehicle) test last week (up to 32t rigid) and I’m about to buy a truck that’ll probably do 15-20mpg and then maybe I’ll feel it….

We’re tickling US$4/gallon here in Louisville, KY.

As for a more fuel efficient car, my new hybrid F150 is being held hostage by the semi-conductor crisis. While, not spectacular, 24MPG is pretty good for an F150. And, better than my Explorer at 20MPG.

I paid 1,97€ a litre last time and that was before the invasion. We have an official government website to check prices in France : https://www.prix-carburants.gouv.fr/ Same petrol station the price is now 2,135€. New record for sure. Diesel fuel is 1,999€, that's insane.

Fortunately for me I don't actually pay as it's my company car, provided with a gas card.

That’s interesting, diesel is typically ~0.05 per litre more than petrol in the uk.

In France diesel is historically less taxed than gasoline. The difference has been reduced (by increasing the tax on diesel) until the gilets jaunes revolt. So it's still a bit less taxed.

North America and Europe have fallen in love with home delivery. Wait till you see the surcharges on your next Amazon purchase. And to my knowledge. none of the delivery services have any significant number of hybrid or EV's.

I hope governments don't implement price controls - it will only make things worse. Was a teenager during the gas lines of 73.

i live in northeast Ohio. Temps today are approaching 70 deg F. All I can hear sitting outside are the sounds of motorcycles "screaming" on the freeway near me. Prices haven't impacted their fuel consumption.

We finally hit $2 a litre here in Metro Vancouver the other day. I'm not too worried about paying more to fill up my personal vehicle, what worries me is the direct effect that it will have on everything else. Grocery shopping is becoming a luxury and this will put many Canadians into some serious financial hardship. Between hyped up housing costs, spiralling living expenses and our insane taxes - we are truly :tapedshut:

As far as my personal vehicle goes, I top up the tank every payday - although I'm spending the same amount of money over the year, I find the psychological impact a bit more easy to process that way when I only have to pay $40 every 2 weeks instead of $80 every 4 weeks - I know its the same amount of money but its just easier to budget that way I find.

I'm just glad my old G37 has decent gas milage, I get in the upper 20s and put 10 gallons in every other week. For me all my driving is to work and back, I am lucky enough to be able to walk everywhere else. Even with 10 gallons of 91 it still sucks, gas is right at $3.80 a gallon where I live.

I paid £1.60 a litre for diesel yesterday.

But, it could be worse. We could be Ukrainian.

They also think nothing of idling for 45 minutes in line to fill up at Costco to save pennies on their gas. Makes zero sense unless there’s no queue.

This is also what happens when oil companies lay off hundreds of thousands during the pandemic to maintain profitability and don’t have a system in place to rehire at scale when demand returns.

Or idling in a drive thru line at Starbucks or Timmie's instead of parking and going inside which takes less than 5 minutes

Not only that, with all the supply chain issues I'm sure it's hard to get equipment.

Still, the fact these executives are only listening to investors/obnoxious Wall Street a-holes like Cramer make this all a moot point. I'm sure a bigger driller like Devon would be able to ramp up more quickly than some small private company if Wall Street wasn't in the way.

Just paid $5.20/gal ($1.37/L) for 93 octane about 30 minutes ago. I think that's like $0.80/gal more expensive than it was last weekend when I tanked up.

It is 6.50 a gallon across many parts of Los Angeles. These prices will have huge impacts on U.S. aviation.

It's like that in AZ LOL. The line at Sams is so long I go to Terribles and pay the extra 40c a gallon with no wait and no stress it's so worth it. I can even check my oil!

Agreed. Can't think of an industry at more risk. Might be the reason their publically traded stocks got creamed on Friday.

But we'll still see pictures of some celebrity jetting off in a G-V to some Carribean destination to enjoy their bachelorette party. FBO prices for private jets at LAX are around $8.50 per gallon

My job involves driving a company vehicle, and in a typical 8-hour shift I drive a total of 35-50 miles. We usually fill up the vehicles, which are early 2010s Ford Expeditions, when there's half a tank of fuel left. Just to fill up from around half a tank costs $50 or more. Maybe I'm just not used to the big fuel tanks of SUVs. It also doesn't help that these vehicles are pretty much running 24/7. I wish we could turn them off when we're just waiting for someone to call for a pick up, but we're required to leave them running.

I wonder if high gas prices will help cities. People living in suburbs have to drive all over the place to get anything done and delivery services will become extremely expensive. In cities you can walk/bike to grocery stores, restaurants and other places. In Los Angeles people are cutting back driving to essential needs only in many interviews. Living in a city I can do many things without ever stepping into a car.

Sounds like Scott Kirby and company should give Granholm and these Wall Street "analysts" a piece of their mind, especially during the next investor conference.

EDIT - agree with your point about walkable neighborhoods. It seems to be a lost concept here in the states. :(

I would rather pay more at the pump than pay a lot as is and use Russian oil. The United States has plenty of oil reserves and untapped oil to be sustainable on our own oil or our own and the Middle Eastern oil. I don't know what percentage of oil used in the US is Russian though.

Just paid about $2.5/liter ($9.5 per gallon) for diesel in Sweden. Part of the high prices is that it is mandatory that they mix in 30% biodiesel. That feels good as it means less money to dictatorships such as Saudi, Russia and Norway. ;)

Went up another 10 cents per litre here in Metro Vancouver - 209.9/litre

Double edged sword for me, costs me more to fuel my car but more job security as more and more folks will have no choice but to take the bus :scratchchin:

I only go through half a tank every 2 weeks, so thats liveable - but I'm heading into the interior of BC next month to visit my dad - man, thats gonna be a costly trip now.

Prices have come down here a bit in the Southern Highlands of NSW a bit since the Russians did the thing highest I paid a couple days after was $2.029 per litre for petrol, back down to the last time I filled up $1.769CPL

Considering when covid first hit a couple of years ago I was paying $0.879 per litre when just about every one stopped using their cars and planes were grounded

Here you pay around 0.50€ per liter, and it's already way too much IMO.

Anyways, yes, as Aesma said, Diesel is around 2€ per liter at the premium brands (Total for example) and 1.8€ at the supermarket stations.

It sure hurts. And it will keep on going up, at least for a while.
A family member that works in the oil industry foresees gas and diesel up to 3€ per liter, for what it's worth. It doesn't mean it will happen, but it doesn't seem crazy for businesses involved in the industry.

Where? I filled up Thursday in greater LA for $4.47. At Costco, but early enough there was no wait.

To others:
I felt it. Between what is right (sanctions) and higher prices, we'll live. This isn't that bad. Remember when oil was even pricier that launched the A320NEO, MAX, and c-series? It will get pricier as we cannot keep releasing oil from the reserve. I see no reason oil won't break $150/gallon.

In the late 1980s oil was $125. That was before the high inflation between now and then too.

The above link predicts $5/gallon gasoline ($6 in California due to our absurd gasoline laws). Demand exceeds supply, prices will rise.

Diesel is running $4.35/gallon at the cheaper stations around me right now so the diesel Jetta is about $50-$52 to fill up if we pay full price. We fully take advantage of our Kroger fuel points and on a good month can get $1.00/gallon off but typically land around $.70-.80/gallon off - that tank we run down as low as possible before we fill up.

Now my E-Golf with its $0 fueling cost (free charging at work) helps to offset the cost of the Jetta. Have had a few colleagues joke with me asking me how painful gas prices are for me.

There is 'pain at the pump' for many, especially truck operators, the poor, working class, retired on fixed incomes. With the US National average of $4.00 for gasoline, $4.65 for diesel per gallon and places like California approaching $6/gallon for both gas and diesel, this is going to do serious damage to the economy in the USA with comparable problems in much of the world.

Even if gas goes up $2 a gallon, that's still probably less than $20 a week for the average person. The "cost" is more psychological than real.

Exactly. There are things in life that have prices that go up and down. We typically adapt.

It looks like we’ll have to make small sacrifices for the better good. Certainly not fun but skipping a few things here and there is completely livable.

Yep, that's about it.
I filled with diesel for 125€ for 70 liters wich is about 137$ for 18,5 gallons in France.

EDIT: keep in mind diesel is still slightly undertaxed compared to gasoline in France, even though it's going to get even in the future.

When I started working (a very long time ago now!), folks were saying they’d stop drinking when beer hit £1 a pint and stop driving when petrol hit £1 a gallon (UK gallon being 1/3 larger than a US one).

Of course both milestones were met and everyone carried on drinking and driving (ha, not at the same time!)

Agreed. The feds need to stop begging OPEC (not going anywhere), and put some pressure on these publicly-traded producers like Devon that are purposely restricting capital to expand domestic production.

The other option is we conserve like our ancestors did doing WWII, but I don't see the political will to do that now. Plus, fewer Americans live in denser neighborhoods and take transit than in the 40s.

I payed 1.87eu for 1L diesel last night, and that was about the cheapest around (in The Netherlands). That's the highest it's ever been and the end is not yet in sight. I'm glad I drive a very efficient small diesel. I guess driving a big engine BMW or a V8 SUV suddenly isn't as cool anymore..

I seem to be the only one who doesn't care what gas prices do, haha. (Yes, I'm very cognizant of my privilege/ability not to care given my income). I like to drive, often for no reason but to take a few hours to relax, and my car gets absolutely shit mileage, I'll happily take the hit at the tank, even at the current prices.

If I had a commute, say 100Km return, and had to pay for it, I would already be driving a Tesla. Or maybe a Renault Zoe depending on the timing of that decision (few years ago vs more recently when the TM3 SR+ became affordable here).

Interesting to see the price difference for the same product across countries. I do figure it will hit $2 a liter where I am and what can ya do really. Like everything we adapt, and the initial shock wears out after a while.
For some of us budgeting for gas was not that big of a deal, seems for some lower incomes it may be the difference between going out for lunch or not because I have to put gas in my car. Everything is up, just have to ride it out I guess.
