The Florida Senate passed a bill Wednesday to dissolve the Reedy Creek Improvement District as Republicans seek to punish Disney for opposing HB 1557, known by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” law—potentially eliminating the special district that Walt Disney World uses to operate as its own municipality, and setting up a court battle over the Florida theme parks’ future.

Welcome to 1984. Corporations are people according to the GOP when it comes to funds and donations, but speak against the GOP, and they take revenge.

I wonder how many businesses will have to rethink their GOP backing before it is too late.

For tax payers, the extra funding would be a boon as it would be distributed throughout the county. However, local governments would also absorb all of the district’s liabilities, including the enormous amount of debt on its books.

Reedy Creek historically operates at a loss of approximately $5 to $10 million per year, per its financial reports. The current arrangement renders that meaningless since Disney is able to subsidize its own operations with theme park revenue.

According to lawmakers, though, there is as much as $1 billion in debt on the balance sheets that for which taxpayers would become responsible, possibly amounting to as much as thousands of dollars per household.

I will also say that I don't believe it would be easy - but not impossible - for Disney to basically pull operations out of Florida. Close the hotels, theme parks etc.

Now, both those things said, could Disney not say 'enough is enough' and opt to close up operations, or close up operations and move them to a state with a government that is less antagonistic (recognizing it would not be without a huge financial impact on Disney)?

I believe Disney has moved a lot of operations beyond the theme park business, including animation studio,s to their properties in Orlando to reduce overhead costs. Florida is a much lower cost of living and tax state and until now had easily bribed politicians to do their bidding.
Sadly Disney is in a bad spot. They don't want to have employees or their families facing unnecessary hassles for their lifestyles, detracting them from employment, nor lose GLTBQ+ customers either. Republicans seem to need to pander to a critical part of their base, mainly evangelical Christians who are hypocrites in their openly hating GLTBQ's.
As to this corporate owned quasi-government entity, it was dead wrong in the first place but the Disney company bribed enough politicians to get it.

I’ve been saying this for a while now, and this is another piece of evidence. The GOP has been seeing a change in its voting base — the whole party of Reagan thing is done. Replaced is a more tribal party that functions a lot like an old school blue collar union.

Corporations are people and money is speech. That was established by SCOTUS. Disney is simply doing what they are allowed to do. Besides that, they are including people and families. Why is that a bad thing?

I really am interested to see the fall political advertisements in swing districts. There is going to be some eye opening campaigns this fall, and the GOP is feeding a lot of ammunition to the democrats right now.

It'll take a lot of those inspectors with a lot of expertise," he said. "Someone is going to have to pay for that. If that burden falls on taxpayers, that's not going to look good for Gov. Desantis. This is going to look like folly."

I love how carefully crafted polls are to mislead people to achieve a desired result. Just parse out parts of something, don't ask on the whole thing. And then some people are easily fooled by such things or allow themselves to be so satisfy some inner need for validation.

First of all, it is the DEMOCRATIC party. There is nor has there ever been a democrat party.

Second, the "Don't Say Gay" bill is addressing a problem that never existed. Literally no teacher anywhere was teaching K-3 students about sex or sexual orientation. Even though teachers are not nor have ever taught children that young about sex and gender, I think we can all agree on that. But, the bill goes on to limit what teachers can discuss with students at higher grades. Like 9-12. Parents could sue if a sex ed teacher talks about trans or gay people. Teachers can not include and support gay and trans teens, according to the bill.

Republican hero Lauren Boebert even suggested waiting until a person is 21 before deciding their sexual orientation and gender identity.

Ditto for carefully crafted slogans like "Don't Say Gay". Which is why when a poll accurately reflects what's in a bill vs an intentionally misleading slogan, it's not much of surprise a majority of Democrats support a bill you've been told they strongly oppose.

The thing here is that any effects won't become apparent until a few years down the road. DeSantis is up for reelection this November and all he will care about is showing the national electorate that he managed to win reelection in a swingy red state and can therefore deliver the White House to Republicans come election 2024. Voters everywhere have short term memories. Even when the damage becomes apparent, he'll pass a "tax cut" to brandish even further conservative credentials. If reelected this year, he'll be out of office by 2026 and as such doesn't have to worry about anything else. If he wins the White House, he has other items to content with rather than his record as FL governor. If he loses his bid, he's term limited anyway. He could attempt to primary Rubio in 2028 or run for Scott's seat if he decides to retire, but bottom line is that he likely won't care about the damage done.

Not sure what your point is. There were Jewish Nazis, there were blacks who supported the Confederacy, there are gay conservatives, and there's Caitlyn on Fox. Trump's mentor Roy Cohn--dear friend of Roger Stone--was a gay man that helped conservatives purge the government of gay people and then died of AIDS while his conservative buddies cheered on the disease. There were several gay Nazis in Hitler's inner circle until...they were un-alived. Nothing new under the sun--some people will always throw their own under the bus for the tiniest whiff of power.

That boomerang may serve Desantis well in his Florida ambitions, but it will not serve him on the National scale.

First of all, it is the DEMOCRATIC party. There is nor has there ever been a democrat party.

Second, the "Don't Say Gay" bill is addressing a problem that never existed. Literally no teacher anywhere was teaching K-3 students about sex or sexual orientation. Even though teachers are not nor have ever taught children that young about sex and gender, I think we can all agree on that. But, the bill goes on to limit what teachers can discuss with students at higher grades. Like 9-12. Parents could sue if a sex ed teacher talks about trans or gay people. Teachers can not include and support gay and trans teens, according to the bill.

Republican hero Lauren Boebert even suggested waiting until a person is 21 before deciding their sexual orientation and gender identity.

Obviously I didn’t know the term when I was a kid but I knew I was different. Thankfully my family never had an issue with my little mermaid dolls. It remains to be seen where a lot of that will land. I agree though, DeSantis is making a national play that will like score points with voters for whom economics goes over their head (fun fact, Disney taxed themselves higher than they would’ve paid to the local taxman. Have fun paying that bill). That will likely play well nationally too, though at what corporate dollar cost now that he has gone there and attacked the real source of money. By that time Disney will likely have prevailed in court — even Miss Obsequiousness 2020 Jenna Ellis has said that. Having said all that, his real concern needs to be Trump. Trump is precisely the kind of guy who will stab him in the back if he thinks DeSantis will take some of his spotlight, or if he wants to run again. Then DeSantis is shtupped.

Yes and no. Lawyers and escorts have a lot in common — they’ll do whatever they’re paid to do — and we know Trump has dallied with both. Ellis was a vocal Trump critical until he started to pay her. (Why she was important in the first place I’m still trying to figure out, but that’s a discussion for another thread).

The most ironic thing about this post is you present an argument with strawmen (as in more than one) saying conservatives are smearing an entire group (which they're not) yet your doing exactly that by smearing all conservatives as "vicious homophobes". Sorry, kids are sent to school for kids, not for teachers' self expression, and definitely not for them to be encouraged to experiment with different genders and pronouns in preschool.
