The lost decade of the world?

Fri May 20, 2022 4:46 am

I have just checked GDP per capita data of some moderately developed countries around the world from World Bank and made the following chart:
Image

It appears that, the economy of many countries of the world have stopped growing, after the 2008 financial crisis, and have continued stagnating for more than a decade by now.

I think this seems to be similar to the lost decade experienced by Japan after their 1980s bubble burst?

How to prevent the world from repeating experience, extending the lost decade to become lost decades?

Roll back the increasingly-draconian and commerce-prohibitive environmental regulations.

Grow up. You know rolling back environmental regulation won't happen. Infact it will need to be X10.

This is also not a problem for the economy. The countries with the tightest environmental regulations, tend to be the richest. And it hasn't stopped them from becoming richer.

Yeah, screw those future generations. Who really cares what their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have to put up with? Me, me, me!

I randomly checked status of environmental regulation of Turkey, Mexico, Algeria, Indonesia from list of countries plotted onto the graph, and I don't think their regulations can be described as draconian

Your statement is emotional and irrelevant. Ireland has the most strict environmental policies of anyone on that chart, and they're the only ones still expanding.

That attitude has been around for the last 40 years. Have you seen the United States debt?

We're probably just beginning our second decade. The bill hasn't landed for the pandemic, and you can add to that the disruption and inflation caused by Putin's little "special operation". I wouldn't be optimistic about growth at all.

The chart is logarithmic so it's a bit misleading, if a country is even a bit above what is was in 2008 then it's still significant. And it's by capita so demography plays a role, as well as immigration.

The question is rather, is GDP still a relevant tool, and do we really want it to grow if it means the continued acceleration of greenhouse gasses emissions, and pollution in general ?
