Favorite artists/singers in other languages

Sat Jun 04, 2022 12:13 am

As the title suggests, what are your favorite singers that primarily sing in a language you do not consider your mother tongue?

My mother tongue is English. My list of favorites is likely somewhat random as my exposure to music not in my native tongue typically comes from rather random exposures such as point in time trips overseas, or tangential "discoveries" that are rarely timely in nature.

Dalida -- an ethnically Italian, Egyptian born singer who spent most of her adult life in France, and most of her biggest hits were performed in French
Mana -- a Mexican group who sings in Spanish
Mina -- an Italian singer
Roger Cicero -- a German pop singer

A friend of mine got me into a Swedish band called Kent. While they have an English version of a song called 747, the Swedish version is downright even more amazing.

I'm from the U.S. and enjoy Mylene Farmer of France.
I went to her Bercy shows in 2006 and 2018 attended her tours in 2009 and 2013. I plan to head back over for her 2023 trek.

and then there's Enya of course - yes she's Irish and sings in English but she sings in Gaelic, Latin, Loxian (a made-up lanaguage by her own writing team) .... and then some.

They are amazing. When they announced the end of the band a few years ago by uploading video to Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bubOcI11sps) it became headline news.

And some more Swedish music:

Lars Winnerbäck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5L9ELEdLjI
Veronica Maggio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD77PNAQOQo

Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
George Harrison too.
Freddie Mercury and Frank Sinatra was also good.
The list goes further.

I had to endure Kent 15 times one festival season.
One of the worst band in history. More awful than words can describe. Especially live.

My native language is English, but I like a whole range of groups who sing in other languages

Eluvetie - Celtic folk metal group from Switzerland, performing in a mixture of English and the extinct Gaulish language
Blutengel - Dark electropop from Germany, in German / English
Rammstein - Metal band from Germany, performing in German / English
Dark Princess - Gothic metal from Russia, mixture of Russian and English

There are plenty more bands I enjoy that occasionally sing in everything from mythical Elvish to Latin.

Rammstein, of course.

We've been Eurovision regulars for over 30 years, and my 14yo is a mega fan, so we hear many pop songs in a range of languages. However, the names of artists don't often embed themselves.

This one from Poli Genova is still a standout for me - although only the chorus is in Bulgarian https://youtu.be/PQqUTigWKHY

Its sort of slang for nothing going on, more or less in your pants

This is one of my favourites:

Xavier Naidoo and Sohne Mannheims are pretty good as well.

When I'm really feeling nostalgic and homesick, a bit of "schlager" (folks) music is kinda good lol

When I was young: Omega, the band and to a certain extent Zsuzsa Koncz. Hungarian is their language.

Still today: Italian Opera. Maledetto! Mori! (Archaic human emotions).

Ugh, schlager music. I sometimes go to the local Bavarian club and, well, sit outside where I can't hear the music :P

But German pop is just as good (and bad) as pop anywhere, and I enjoy the difference.

And on road trips with my 19yo, the response to "Du?" is always.....

French:

- Mireille Mathieu

- Maitre GIMS

- Tyssem (sometimes)

- Louane (sometimes)

Gaelic:

- Enya. Her music is stunning. Acoustically brilliant and always timeless.

Portugese:

- Michel Telo

German:

- Dana Winner (also listen to her Dutch and Flemish songs)

- Heino

Unrelated, but I really wish that Kygo and Avicii had written some songs in their native languages.

Ach ja, der onkel Heino.

LTU had a big open house back in the early 2000s in DUS, Heino along with the No Angles were performing in the hanger - was actually a pretty good show lol.

Sadly, there is no Omega anymore. Tamas Mihaly, the bass player and Laszlo Benko, the keyboard player passed away within a week from each other in fall 2020.
The frontman, Janos Kobor succumbed to covid in December 2021.

Hi,

Firstly many thanks for the thread and posts too. To be honest as an English first language many of the names mentioned so far I do not know of but some like Rammstein and Kent I have heard of or heard a bit of. Anyway if curious a few who I have picked up for me anyway over the years:

1. Ennio Morricone (the Italian film music composer)
2. Joao Gilberto (bossa nova from Brazil?)
3. Nek (Italian rock whose album Une Parte Di Me I heard in a shop in Zurich airport.
4. Natasha St.Pier (I think French Canadian and heard her album Longeur D'Ondes in France)
5. Isabelle Boulay (found her album Tout Un Jour maybe online (French?))
6. Mahmoud El Esseily (Egyptian singer I heard on Satellite TV here once singing his song Hader)
7. A few KPop/CPop/TPop soundtracks I got from watching dramas (Kim Sam Soon, Goong, It Started With a Kiss, Reaching for the stars)
8. And now more just stuff I sometimes come across whilst listening to online radio sometimes. French singles by people like Louane and a song by Big Flo & Oli (French again I think).

Overall though now in some ways I feel that I can barely keep up. There was a song I really liked called Gisher E by Silva Hokkagen (Armenian) and living in the London suburbs I often hear some cool music in a language I don't know coming out of someone's car but I think I give up! Maybe there are going to be some great tunes that I never know but maybe as my therapist might say "you know but that's ok!"

Anyway sorry for going on quite a bit but with many thanks anyway for reading if one did(!),
