A different group, Caladan Oceanic, has located USS Samuel B Roberts which was sunk in the Battle for Leyte Gulf. Same group found USS Johnston last year.

The Roberts was found at a depth of 22600 ft. It’s the deepest shipwreck ever explored.

Think technically this is a Non-Av topic.
But, this is fascinating stuff. I was concerned when Paul Allen died that his organization wouldn't continue to look for these World War II shipwrecks, but they did. Then the pandemic hit and his organization's research vessel went into long-term layup, so I was sure that was done. But,a long comes this guy who was continued the quest with his own organization and has found, amongst other things, the USS Johnston last year and then the USS Samuel B. Roberts this year. Great finds for history.

This is a very cool find. I'm impressed and fascinated that we have the technology to make discoveries at this depth.

Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors is a great book about the Battle Off Samar. Those destroyermen had huge, brass ones!

It's somewhat surprising to me that Hollywood has never tried to tackle this subject. Probably not the movie industry's cup of tea to depict a naval battle quite like this, but it does have a "if this was a movie you would say it's too far-fetched" feeling to it.

ETA Everyone with a passing knowledge of the Pacific War knew that Halsey had a few major screwups...chasing the Northern Force and getting caught in the center of the typhoons were a couple of them. Maybe that's why there was a class of destroyers named after Spruance and not Halsey.

Well, Spurance was also a destroyer skipper multiple times over in earlier career.
But, yes, I think it's fair to say the Navy quietly honored certain men of high rank more than others in the post-World War II years.
