What shipping carriers do you mostly ship with?

Tue Jun 28, 2022 9:25 pm

I was wondering, when shipping your own packages, what shipping carriers do you mostly ship with?

I mostly use USPS for most of my items that I sell as well as what I ship to friends and family. Occasionally I will use UPS for larger items (most recently my old Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 tablet). I rarely use FedEx since for most of what I ship they rarely seem to have the best rate, and plus for general shipping Pirate Ship gives me discounts for USPS and UPS but not FedEx.

It all depends on the size and weight of the package, and if you're going through eBay, what the eBay shipping discount is?

For me, if the item is under a couple pounds I will usually just use USPS. If you're shipping larger and heavier packages that will not fit in their 'flat rate' or 'regional' boxes then I would avoid them.
FedEx or UPS for the big stuff.

eBay's nifty rate calculator shows the rates before and after discount.
https://www.ebay.com/shp/Calculator

Sometimes the discount can be huge like >80% depending on the weight and dimensions. For example I sold an old Gamewell fire alarm box last year that weighed 62-lbs.
USPS best rate was ~$140, FedEx $90, and UPS was just $72 (after a 49% discount).

Never heard of Pirate Ship, will check it out.

I use Kerry and Lex, but I guess you meant originating in the US?

UPS and Fedex are B2B companies, they don't know how to deal with private customers, even if they're now trying, when before that wasn't even an option.

Here in France aside from the national post (French USPS) what is becoming more and more common are ultra cheap transport, where you print the label (and pay), give the package to a local shop, and it gets sent to a shop chosen by the recipient. It works well and costs less than 5€.

Yup in Europe UPS are awful. Customer service is appaling - they say they have to always attempt delivery before they can ever make a change to a parcel. Even if it's been sent to the wrong address. Seems to be only one central call centre.

DHL in Europe is generally excellent. Local call centres, live tracking in many areas. DPD are great in the UK, but awful in many other parts of Europe.

Well said. I use the USPS.

AFAIK, UPS and FedEx ship person to person as well as business to business. We don't have a FedEx shipping center near here, so we have to use either USPS or UPS. I use UPS mostly for packages. I will agree that UPS customer service is horrible.

I frequent the post office (USPS) so often for mailings and such that my wife accuses me (jokingly) of having an affair with the teller at the post office branch.

We also use UPS fairly often. I’d put FedEx at a distant 3rd.

I’m not sure what Aesma meant about UPS and FedEx being ‘B2B’ only. Any person can walk into a UPS Or FedEx store and mail a box. We do it often.

He's talking about their operations in Europe. This is an international website.
