Sat Jul 02, 2022 11:54 pm

If you've ever been to an airshow that Shockwave was apart of you know it's a huge attraction. This is so sad.

So sad. I just saw I’m guessing him at Hill AF here in Utah last weekend!!!! He got really close to the crowds at certain points!

Horrible. I've seen at the Westover airshow in MA and Quonset Pt. RI.

I have always looked with fear at the Shockwave videos.

Many years ago, like 1980, a friend of family was a professional jet car stuntman. He died leaving a wife and two year old daughter. Shockwave was doing a dangerous occupation. RIP.

Good Post by Juan Browne on the incident.

He does a full analysis of how the rig worked, and then shows starting at 8:30 what seemed to happen in the accident. The drogue parachute was out right as the truck overtook the plane, which indicates a failure of some sort, and I imagine it was the tires shredding.

My Condolences to the family and friends.

Was the truck still powered by 3 afterburning Westinghouse J-34's?

According to the video I posted, yes. Stacked in a triangle.

Seems as if the reason is a blown tire was the reason…

Neal Darnell explained that a blown tire ruptured SHOCKWAVE’s fuel tank. “As the tire came apart it ruptured the fuel tank on the left side of the car and that, of course, initiated the fire. It happened so quickly that Chris didn’t even have time to react,” he told the AP.

Juan's video linked above says that it used "stock" truck tyres that are shaved down so that they're more like slick tyres. I know they race trucks, but do they even have Z speed rated tyres for trucks?

This is actually the second time the Shockwave jet truck has crashed.

The first time happened in 2008 when it was still owned and operated by the original creators/owners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEZlwaEgjkY

That accident was less severe: the drag chutes didn't deploy correctly, and the truck slid on its side for a while before doing a couple of cartwheels in the grass. The driver, Kent Shockley, walked away with minor injuries.

From watching the video, the truck went into a “z-axis spin” at around 250-300mph, conserving its momentum before starting to cartwheel in the dirt. Those heavy engines must have come loose with that much centrifugal force. It was an odd crash that would have been influenced by aero, momentum and mechanical factors like tire failure, engine failure. Just my 2 cents. No clear cause immediately jumped out from the video.
