Airport! Movie headed back to the big screen!

Sat Jul 23, 2022 4:13 pm

I just noticed this, the original Airport disaster movie will be heading back to the big screen. One time only, one showing only! Complete with Joe Patroni! The Golden Odyssey to Rome. Very tempted to buy my tickets and make the trek to MSP to see it.

Cheers!

Helen Hayes won an oscar for her role in that movie! How dare you forget that part! LOL Yes, that would be fantastic to see on the big screen!

Great news! Shirley it’s a matter of time for Airplane to get back to the cinemas as well! Maybe the Rio Grande cinema?

The movie theatres here showed a whole string of old movies during the pandemic when new releases were put on hold. Wish they'd keep that up.

I thought from the title they might be doing a new one featuring a Dreamliner. ;)

Don’t call me Shirley!

I still haven’t quite worked out why this was released as Flying High in Australia. I think I’ve only ever seen it on the small screen.

Been trying to see how it would work, the movie starts at 7:15pm, so an overnight is really the only way it would work for me. That would make the excursion a little too expensive to swing.

Has this ever been part of IFE with any airline?

Always thought Airport was an overbloated and overrated cheesy melodrama. Airplane on the other hand always has me in stitches!!

Airport was a disaster movie based on a book that wasn't really a disaster story. It was more a deep dive into the drama and inner workings of a modern big-city airport. The stricken airliner was just another stressor for the characters to react to. Thats why it doesn't always play as "disaster movie" like others of the era like Earthquake, The Towering Inferno, etc.

Hi,

Just to say many thanks for the heads-up and for me I guess I like how these kind of movies at least still get a little big-screen time even if I find them often hard to get to... And maybe if curious a few further thoughts from here (sorry!):

1. For me the closest I guess I got was seeing Die Hard 2 on the big screen in the US and I think the night before a transcontinental flight. Wow looking back I was young and had no idea what anxiety was I guess then(!)

2. I think I read the Airport book maybe around 2002 and really liked it at the time. Maybe I should try and look for a digital version now if I can or try and rent the movie from iTunes or something similar.

3. In terms of cinema replays I think Top Gun 1 played here locally in the UK for an anniversary maybe around 2015? Would have been great but sadly saw it a few days after it was shown. But a long time ago I do remember going to Gone With the Wind in Santa Monica (CA) and whilst it was really cool it was very long and I think a few of us came out of the theatre around 1am maybe(!)

4. And finally regarding the retro disaster movies I kinda liked Rollercoaster I think it was called? And Meteor with Sean Connery. And the Airport movie where they raised the jumbo from underwater? But to see a movie for me like Out of Africa on the big screen that I would not say no to!

Anyway with many thanks only sorry for going on a bit,

Ps762

P.S. Although it was not Airport and IFE I do seem to remember going on an overnight coach trip in 1996 speeding through Malaysian roads and they had the movie 'Speed' on the TV at the front.
