Artists were standing in a kind of shelf system or array of boxes or something like this. Only one cell was active at one time.
The band in question was kind of second league but still in heavy rotation on MTV.

it was a duett by a man and a gorgeous lady with long black curly hairs. The man would sing the verses and the lady would sing the chorus only. But the chorus just consisted of something like „du-du-du-du-di-du….“, sung in a very rhythmic way.
Does anybody know this song? It must have been successful in the UK but for some reasons I never heard this song in Germany.

Not sure that i have this right, but when I see this,

I can only think of Suzanne Vega Tom's Diner ( she is the only one singing).

Maybe?

Sounds like it was kind of imitating Hollywood Squares?

Apparently it was/is the visual element that he remembers and intrigues him.

I thought about this video but it’s most probably not what the OP is looking for, „Living in a box“:

Thanks for that, I’m absolutely amazed that a Split Enz from NZ were played 6 times on the first day, I didn’t think they had any success in the US at all.

I started freshman year of college in fall of '83 and I can't tell you how many times I heard "I Got You" at parties and such. May not have been a big hit on the charts but when it came on somebody's stereo the place started hoppin'.

I saw this video for the first time a couple of years ago and didn't remember the song but I was in grade school not college so that's probably why. I thought the video and cinematography looked slightly more recent than 1980 and thought why would they have a video this well produced before MTV was even launched? I thought he looked very animated in this video, so I wasn't at all surprised when I found out this band goes back to the early to mid 1970s, because he looks very experienced in front of a camera. Since discovering this song and video, I have gotten more into Split Enz. I still can't believe he's the lead singer of Crowded House. I think his voice sounds totally different in Crowded House than in Split Enz. Here's the video btw...

Thank you, but no: of course I would have recognized Suzanne Vega. But the chorus was very similar to Susanne‘s „du-du-du…“
Anyhow, thank you very much for your reply.

My mistake, I set you on the wrong track: it wasn’t „du-du-di-du“ but „Shiny, shiny, sha-na-na-na“ . And that’s the title of the song, „Shiny shiny“ by Haysi Fantayzee: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tUJQigu0_ ... ZhbnRhc2ll
Mystery solved!

The lead singer of Split Enz is Tim Finn, the lead singer of Crowded House is his brother Neil Finn. Neil was a member of Split Enz in its later years, when they broke up he formed the Mullanes who morphed into Crowded House. New was a member of Crowded House for a short time, the only album he's on is Woodface. Crowded House has two very distinct eras pre Paul Hester death, this is there classic era ending with Together Alone, and post Paul starting with Time on Earth.

Although, of course, Neil was lead vocalist on Split Enz's first major international (apart from Australia) hit "I Got You", and also that first clip played on MTV, "History Never Repeats". He also took over lead vocals for Split Enz when Tim left, so it's easy to see how people outside Australasia may view the band differently.
As to the op's question, no idea....

Split Enz only released one album after Tim Left, See Ya Round.
