Heart failure and similar conditions making it difficult to ambulate are not at all unusual at 95. She has had an incredible run...

Doctors saying that she is "comfortable" is usually an indication of the inevitable.

Rolling coverage in Australia as well. One of the networks had their retained Royal commentator speaking in London, dressed in black suit & black tie... They also were reporting the BBC anchors were also dressed in dark clothing....

"Being comfortable" probably means she's no longer fully concious, and slipping away as we speak, evidenced also by the fact all her close family members are gathering at her bedside to let her go peacefully.

Interesting also how somebody must clearly have given a wink to the press it is indeed about to happen, as all communication from their side is suddenly adding to the sense of seriousness, whereas the official statement itself from the Palace is rather neutral still in itself: clearly orchestrated to help pass the message the UK will have another monarch by tomorrow morning or the day after.

She must have gone backwards quite a lot over the past 48 hours, as she kissed hands with her new (and as it now turns out to be last) PM just 48 hours ago, her first one was W. Churchill BTW, just to put into perspective what a huge timespan QEII bridges... but that bridge is now going to come down anytime soon.

It'll also mean the return to "King" iso "Queen" in the national anthem for the next 70 or 80 years or so, at least.

Did not see the significance when watching just uploaded footage from the Commons debate, when as reported below, Angela Rayner looked to her side and suddenly shot past her colleagues on the benches;

The code used to be "London Bridge is down", but I think it's been changed since it became public. I presume it's something similarly unlikely, maybe "Megan is moving back to Britain"

Time waits for no one, and it seems we will be marking time with a King of England rather soon.

May she be comfortable at this time

Sky news presenters have changed to wearing black also. I wonder if she has passed and just waiting for family who just landed at ABZ before an official announcement .

I didn't mention it earlier, but since you've raised the possibility...

One of my daughters works as a video editor and has high-up contacts in the BBC. She says they're telling her the Queen is already dead and that an official announcement will follow later today. All the current "news" is just preparing the country for the inevitable.

I'm just passing this snippet on, I have no way of knowing if it's true or not.

Not surprising. If I remember correctly, none of the royals' deaths have been announced as they happen. I presume everyone close and all the machinery of state have to be prepared before any public announcement is made.

She had Covid recently, but more significantly, she lost her husband, and rock, over a year ago. It's not unusual for older people to not last long after their spouse has died.

The banner header on the BBC website is now black. It was red (at least for me in the USA) until a few minutes ago.

I am not a monarchist by any measure, but for the life of me It’ll be hard to imagine a world without her. She seemed indestructible, plus she loved to wear my favourite colour (Bianchi Celeste) always like her for that. Do wish her and Phillip smooth sailing. Indeed very sad news.

For some reason I’d always assumed when the time came, it would be a shock, learning the Queen had suddenly and unexpectedly passed in the night, rather than a slow decline tracked by the media and a painful vigil, waiting for the inevitable.

I can’t decide which would be easier for the family, the people of the UK, and the world.

But regardless, it’ll be a different world when she’s gone.

Indeed. Hopefully her bozo of a son steps up and surprises us. Her daughter would’ve been the best option to succeed her…in an ideal world.

Anyone here has to be at least 75 to have any memory of another Head Of State, the image on every bit of currency.
Speaking to my Mum, aged 91, before this news broke, we were expecting it sadly, I mentioned that 'you were there at the beginning', she met Dad at the Coronation, in the crowds in London.
On starting work in 1946 as a dressmaker, Mum worked on part of the train for Princess Elizabeth's wedding dress.

Although of course the Monarch has no power over us in lawmaking, the presence has always been palpable.
I got to see the Queen in the flesh twice, once in a break at a comedy show in London, outside from a side street a Rolls pulled her and there she was in the back.
20 years later, more distantly, on the Balcony with the rest of the family at the RAF 100 flypast.

Fond memories of the 1977 Silver Jubilee, an event thought by many to be potentially a flop, it wasn't and neither was the Golden one in 2002.

I do not envy King Charles III. He has impossible shoes (most always heels in fact) to fill.

It will not be easy for him, nor the public on him I suspect.

I read that Charles at one point was considering King Arthur (one of his middle names) but thankfully went with Charles. One can imagine the uproar if we went with Arthur. He may have been joking at the time of course and may have been hearsay at best or a tall tale at worst.

RIP ER II.

Long Live The King.

I know coins retain the deceased monarchs head for the remainder of the year. Presumably it's the same for banknotes. They will both remain in circulation. I can remember occasionaly finding Victorian coins in my change up to 1971.

Yes, after decimalization in 1971, some of the old currency was retained until they were gradually phased out, the old Shilling became 5p, many still with the King on them, though the new 5p coins were minted from 1968. I certainly remember them with the King on them as a kid.
The old ones carried on until 1990 though I doubt many with the King on them were around by then.
