Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii is erupting again after almost 40 years

Wed Nov 30, 2022 2:28 am

Mauna Loa is erupting on the upper Northeast Rift Zone and putting down a lava flow that has traveled roughly 6 miles from the eruptive vent, covering the Mauna Loa Weather Observatory access road with multiple flow lobes. The flow has not advanced significantly in the last several hours since this footage was taken.

This footage was provided by Andrew Hara, edited by Dane DuPont, with music by Ikaika Marzo, and special thanks to Paradise Helicopters. Footage used with permission.

Nature's response to NASA and SpaceX. Rocket? That's not a rocket. This is a rocket! Fountains of liquid rock.

A lot more eruptions around the world in 2022, global warming from within, a sign of things to come?

Is there any evidence to suggest any increased level of volcanism this year over past years. Also remember most of the volcanoes on earth are at the sea-floor and unless they produce a major eruption we usually don't know about them. The USGS does but they are probably fairly minor and go unreported.

This is a VEI 0-1 and will have no effect on the climate and the damage will be very local. Kilauea has been erupting since 1983 and hasn't had an impact on the wider climate. We here about things stirring especially Indonesia but that is the most active volcanic place on the planet. Most current volcanoes that are active are VEI 0-3

The only major eruption that I can think of was Tonga in January which was a VEI 5-6. That is Mt. St. Helens level of eruption and that didn't have a significant climatic effect.

A VEI 6 or higher eruption usually is what would have an effect on the climate. Pinatubo make 1992 cooler by 0.5 deg C. Krakatoa did the same after 1883. Mt. Tambora in 1815 (a VEI 7) caused the year without a summer in 1816. Much of this is short term. I could see a VEI 6 happening soon but the last one was 31 years ago (Mt. Pinatubo).

A VEI 8 would be bad news and those happen every 50-000-100,000 years or so. That is a Yellowstone, Lake Toba, Lake Taupo, Phlegraean Fields etc. This would have a decade impact on the climate and kill off enough of us to cause a genetic bottleneck which is what is theorized happened 74,000 years ago when Lake Toba went boom.

Wikipedia link to the VEI scale. Its like the Richter scale. Each notch higher is a factor of 10.

I see this eruption and raise you Mt. St. Helens.

It's really awesome to see the footage below. Especially the shot from the Mauna Kea webcam.
