Great Historians Who Are Great Authors

Mon Dec 05, 2022 9:12 pm

Who to you consider to be great historians who are also great authors and storytellers? I was disappointed with Stephen Ambrose because while he was a great storyteller, he wasn't as good of a historian. We lost a great one a few months ago with David McCullough. He made for riveting reading. I've read his books on the Johnstown Flood, Panama Canal and Brooklyn Bridge and enjoyed them all.
I've also found Max Hastings pretty dry and much prefer Antony Beevor. His books on the different campaigns of WW2 is superb.
Lately, I've been delving into industrial history. Anyone who can make that interesting is a great writer. A great one is Kenneth Warren. I'd read two of his books on American subjects before I realized that he was English. They were Big Steel, about US Steel Corp and a book on Bethlehem Steel. I've also read his books on the coke industry and Henry Clay Frick. I just picked up his history of Cammell Laird and expect it to be superb, also.

Anthony Beevor, read a few of his books about WW2 - extremely well written.

I wasn't particularly interested in his Battle of Stalingrad or Spanish Civil War books but I was so enthralled with his other books that I bought them and enjoyed them.

Georgette Heyer was a novelist who specialised in period romances. Her research was of sufficient quality that she is considered a valid source by historians researching that period.

Other examples are Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Michael Beschloss. The latter has become more of a political commentator in recent years, but his books are good.

David McCullough was the gold standard.
