A.net Book?

Mon Jun 10, 2002 6:30 pm

A friend forwarded me this message from Johan which was in today's newsletter:

===

Airliners.net is looking into the possibility of creating a "coffee
table" type of book featuring a collection of the best three or four hundred
photos of our database. You all know the high quality of our photos and by
selecting the cream of the crop we expect quality and diversity never
before seen in one book, with photos from all over the world and from many time periods.

It will be a celebration of civil aviation focusing on the art and
beauty of aircraft, a positive contribution during these troublesome times for the industry.

To get this project off the ground, we are looking for companies willing
to pre-order significant number of copies or in other ways sponsor the
project. This is the perfect book to have in your office waiting room, to give
employees or customers on special occasions or to sell in your company store.
Please forward this information to the person responsible for promotion within
your company and contact me at [email protected] if your company is the
least interested and I will send you more information.

===

I think it's an excellent idea, and I hope it will become a reality!

Yes, it would be a costly project though ($100,000 - $250,000) so we need cooperate clients to pre-order lots of books to convince the publisher to get involved. The newsletter subscribers are mostly people who work in the industry and if posting the above message in there doesn't give any leads, I'll hold this idea until better days. If on the other hand the interest is substantial, the publisher and I will go ahead with the project.

Regards,
Johan

While there are so many photo books on the market, I think an a.net book (due to the strong "brand") could be really successful.
Would it be an option to publish it via one of the established aviation literature publishers? Then there wouldn't be no need for pre-financing, but on the downside they's probably keep most of the profits.

Such a book would need to focus more on the artistic shots than on standard sideshots IMO.
Not only are they more interesting to look at (at least for people who are not spotters), they also tend to show the operator titles of the aircraft (livery, airline name) less clearly making the book acceptable to competitors (otherwise, would AA buy a book for its offices showing more pictures of UAL aircraft than of their own  Smile/happy/getting dizzy ).
So of these two (using my own to prevent any bad looks, not to mean they are the best examples (hmm, who knows )), the left would be less suitable than the right.

and, before I forget. Be sure to get permission from the photographers as well  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Probably don't have to say so, and most would I think be more than happy to cooperate, but sometimes things get overlooked when enthousiasm gets one to go ahead full steam.

I would love to see this on Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, and Borders book stores. Also selling to companies like BuchAir wouldn't be bad.

I think this is a great idea. I understand that in the past the cash wasn't there, but now maybe it is with the new owners?

Is this idea still shelved?

That's a damn good idea... I love it.

It may be down the list of many other thing we want to do but it's a brilliant idea. I'll definitely add this to future discussions.

Thanks for bringing it up.

I'd buy it if it were on sale. Although, as said above, the choice of which photos should be in the hands of us (the members) with certain restrictions to abide by the artistic ideas put forward in Reply # 4.

I reckon someone should produce a book about he members themselves, pics, profiles, history, some stuff about thier lives, be good as long as there was a good cross-section of people in there...imagine, from AeroWesty, through TedTAce to CastleIsland......

Hopefully the photographers whoms photos will be included in the book will be
1.) asked for permission and
2.) properly compensated for the usage of their property

Just some input for the discussion  Wink

Sounds like an awful lot of photos? Why not make it 100 or 120 and only get in the most attractive ones.

It's difficult to figure out though....

which photos? (maybe a poll with 200-400 photos would be good? Every member can vote the pic he likes most or similar)

Oh, and I agree... let the photographers have a cut of the cake too....or will it be "you'll get photo credit" Big grin

and a free copy. Fortunately I'm not in the league to think about this as my pics won't make it into the book.

Why not make it a year-book? Showing the best/top-100 uploads (not by hits, but by quality, originality, artistic value, whatever criteria...) of that year. This way - if successful - it could be repeated every year  Smile And I am sure it will soon become a collector's item!
If you publish it in two versions (hard-cover/soft-cover) it could be used by collectors and by mass-distributors...

PS: but I hope that there will be no adds next to the photos...  Smile

Best regards,

Walter
