Airliners.net Merchandise Logo Contest!

Tue Jun 25, 2002 3:18 am

Hello all,

As I've mentioned in this thread, we are soon to offer T-shirts, hats, cups and other stuff via Cafepress, all branded with a cool Airliners.net logo. However, the current logo is rather plain for a T-shirt, we're looking for something more dynamic and colorful. A distinctive logo that Airliners.net users would wear with pride!

Help us design this masterpiece and the person with the winning graphic wins three months of First Class Membership PLUS three pieces of merchandise of your choice from the Airliners.net store branded with your design (shipping included)!

These are the rules:

  • The graphic should be submitted on this thread or to my email address [email protected] before Monday 8th of July (two weeks from today)

  • The graphic should be of high quality so that it will look good printed on the merchandise. Either in JPEG format with as little compression as possible and in a big size (like 1280x960 pixels) or (rather) in TIFF, PSD or EPS.

  • You can submit more than one version of your logo for different merchandise or different parts of the merchandise. For instance, you might want to submit one version of your logo for the front of the t-shirt and another one for the back.

  • You can not base your logo on the copyright protected work of someone else (like a photo from Airliners.net) without the permission of the copyright holder.

  • Try not to use photos as it will not look as good printed as it does on your screen. Rather use a few basic colors and a simple design. We have the photographer store in "work in progress" but you might get some ideas by looking at it. You'll find the store here. Note that your design should appeal to every user of Airliners.net, not only to the photographers.

  • The winner will be decided by me in cooperation with the Airliners.net crew and will be announced after July 8 2002.

  • You may include the current Airliners.net logo in your graphic (but don't need to if you don't want to), you will find a high resolution version here (JPEG), here (EPS) and here (TIF).

  • Why not include one of the slogans of Airliners.net:

The wings of the web (official slogan)
The heart of the online aviation community
    Center of commercial aviation online
The world of commercial aviation at your fingertips
Bringing online aviation to new heights
Fly the net! Anyone can surf.
A breath of fresh jet blast
Just like flying but without the peanuts
    Fly by wire
We serve both HVN and HEL
    Stealth fighters are for wimps
    Home of the Internet jet-set
Heavy metal never looked so good
Home of the top aviation photographers in the world!

There you have it. Feel free to ask questions in this thread or by email if you require more information. I'm not much of a graphics designer myself and I very much appreciate your support and are looking forward to seeing the suggestions! Don't be afraid to submit a graphic - you certainly do not have to be a professional to participate!

Thank you!

As I've mentioned in the other thread, I think airliners.net needs a logo with a very strong Brand Identity. It needs to be instantly recognisable from a distance. It should reflect what this website looks like (design/colours etc). And it needs to be used everywhere. So hopefully the winning design will be good enough to be used both on merchandise and on this website itself!

Yup indeed. The key to success is brand awareness. It's not much of a use, when you use logo A for the website, logo B with slogan C for the T-shirts and so on.

I must say, I think the current logo (the one that you can download over here) is really nice. Now, all we need is that the logo gets as much attention as needed. Maybe you should even consider of refurbishing the logo on the top of the main page (replacing it with the 'new', one).

Anyway, thanks for the invitation. I'll see what I can come up with Big grin

are we designing a new logo for airliners.net? or are we just designing a new T-shirt? Can we do both?

Thanks!

Hello Guys,

First I would say I also like the current logo, but I agree with Johan that the current logo is a bit plain for a t-shirt or something. So that's because I have let my mind run free and created a bit more colorful logo  Smile Here it is :

I hope you guys like it. Any comments would be much appreciated  Big thumbs up

Great! Looks very professional. I have two suggestions:
- Can you try using the colours of A.net (blue and grey)
- The contours around the characters are a bit too heavy for me

Johan can you do front and back? I'm thinking that you could put the winning logo on the front (obviously) and then put a small version of that new airliners.net logo on the back between the sholders. Now I would wear something like that.

I think its a nice design ..However I don't see its relation to Airliners.net.

The new logo should symbolize this website. Like in a commercial , it has to remind the ones who know this site immediately of it , this done by using the same colors and "shapes"!

Could somebody please design a pin logo using :

A standard cool looking sideshot of a larger airliner.
Modifiying this by changing background etc..and also fit the whole thing in a frame which outlines a lapel pin. Use the standard A.net colors. Maybe label the aircraft with the current airliners.net logo etc...
Thanks.

Macromedia Fireworks 4 - of course! I tend to use different programmes for one graphic. Theres different features I like of different packages. I even use MS Paint on occasions but not for creating the graphic in its first form. I'd like to help but I cant cos I'm going on holiday (or vacation if you like)...

Hello, they are nice designs.
I like Turbotrents 2nd one the best, in a way it reminds me of the Bob the Builder film clip.
Kaddyuk, sorry to plain.
Exitrow, Nice colours but why is the dog the centre of attention, maybe trying to have something to do with aircraft spotters but a lot of people would miss the point. Peoples first thought they would be thinking about dogs not planes.
747 4-ever. The colours are ok, but the name design seems a bit old. Could it be done with a more modern plane type.

I hope I wasn't to harsh. Thanks for those who put in contributions. I wouldn't be able to design anything like that.

Thanks blink. (Your check is in the mail.)

Seriously folks. Mine is just a goof. I did it in 20 min. It was not meant to be a serious contender. (I think "art contests" are a bit of an oxymoron.)

Some critique to the budding artists from an artist who spent several years in college being critiqued.

1.) Back off on all the Photoshop and PSP filters. Bevelling, gradients and spherizing is for people who can't draw. Flatten your work out (2D). If you absolutely MUST have three dimensions, force the perspective (like the type in my A.net bird dog). If you don't know how to do that, don't do that.

2.) Make the design relevant. Believe it or not, the bird dog actually DOES have a lot to do with a.net. (Think about it. Is there a creature alive with more interest in flying objects that a pointer? It may sound like a stretch but "Spot" has more in common with most airplane enthusiasts than a gold sphere.)

Just putting a (poorly outlined, jagged) picture of an airplane and "AIRLINERS.NET" is too easy and won't differentiate it from any one of the millions of tees at an airshow. Base your graphic elements around such related items as: a camera, places where airplane geeks hang out, (like near the runway), planes flying over people, spotters getting harassed by police (j/k) etc...

3.) Flatness is God with tee designs. If Johan is serious about these, they will be silkscreened and not heat transferred. If they are going to be screened, and cost effective, they will have less than 4 colors. Yup. That's your palette. Four solid colors. (No blends or gradients, or drop shadows.) Constraints like these should make you MORE creative, not less.

Get it? Have fun. Draw on paper. Come up with tons of different designs and cull down to your best two. Then work on them for a day til there's one you like best.

ER

BTW... the title of my logo is "See Spot spot."

Help and advice wanted.
I am an airliner fan, and love drawing logos, etc, as a passtime too. However i am even dummer than the "dummies" (from the famous books) when it comes to using computers and programs!. Have no knowledge how to use any of the different design programs. Any idea if one can actually draw a logo and then scan it and send it as an entry?
Any suggestions and advice would be highly appreciated.

Good logo Ryan!

An idea: make "the wings of the web" be the darkish-red airliners.net color. It'll contrast well with the blues in your logo.

Prat_eegle,
Draw pencil or pen on paper and scan on a flatbed. Then save as a jpg or gif in Photoshop (or like program).

You can also try using a stylus tablet to "draw" directly onto your screen. If you're serious about commercial art, learn a vector based program like Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Freehand. It's invaluable.

Hope this helps.

Hey all,

Thank you for the logo suggestions so far - looking good!

Prat_eegle,
Yes - you are very welcome to use non-computer related tools like pen and paper to create the logo as long as you can scan it and send it in as an image file. I've had a few requests about sending in logos via old-time snail mail but unfortunately I don't think such mail will reach me in time (unless you send them express but that's costly - I'm far away in the exotic Sweden remember!)

Oh and guys, read the post by ExitRow above - he knows what he's talking about. But don't try to copy his "spotting spot" logo even though it looks good I have a strong feeling it's not what we're looking for  Big grin

Johan
