What Is "esteem Level"?

Thu Nov 28, 2002 12:38 am

What does that mean? Can you guys explain to me what is that for? When you see thread and see below your username. Esteem level: 0 or Esteem level: 2277. What is between different 0 to 3000? I don't get it.  Confused

Thanks,

I was just about to ask the same question. Apparently my 'esteem level' on my AA Convair 990 thread is 984. What in the heck is this all about ???

Mine's gone from .25 to 0 to 1 to 3......Johan's probably trying to get the bugs out.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it has to do wit the number of people who put you on their respected users list. The one with the most, KROC, is constantly at a 10, those with none are a 0.

Just a guess.

I'm off to do some workout, will be back later this evening and will tell you all about it then (if I can stay awake - or else I'll do it tomorrow). The first one to figure out the formula used to calculate the Esteem level before I get back gets a choice of one product from the Airliners.net store - on me! Clue: it has something to do with the "respected by" users, their "respected by" users etc. The final number is then divided by 100. I would be very surprised if someone can come up with the correct answer.

Cheers,
Johan

Not really a guess but a sneaking suspicion that it has something to do with a matrix of the number of people who respect you, and what their esteem ratings are themselves. sounds rather complex.

But I'm not going to do any maths for that.

Esteem level of your respected users plus esteem level of the users who respect you divided by 10. It will take a while but I'm checking my answer right now.

Cannot depend of other esteem levels, because it would mean co-dependent values :

like x=f(y), but at the same time y=f(x)

Don't lose your time with those kind of formulas, it cannot work.

On the other hand, I'm curious if the number of times one of your posts have been voted may count ?

It for sure doesn't have to do primarily with your # of respected users. Me and say, Serge both have 8 respected users, yet his esteem level is a 6 and mine is a 3. Go figure.

it might correlate to the respected users list, but where does it really start? i mean we all have numbers, but how do people get these numbers in the first place? who's to say that someone else has a higher esteem level? also, i just wonder what the point of this was....having numbers to judge a 'level of esteem'? not really questioning it, just wondering what it is that got this started...

I'd guess the equation takes your total number of posts vs. your amount of respected users...or something along those lines.

OK I give up I took the average of all my respected users and respeted by and came up with a 12.09 average respected by, and 13.61 average respected users. Close to my level. Now I give up.

Johan, for god's sake, please stop turning this site into a popularity contest....yet another useless, meaningless little cosmetic change which would only make an idiot feel good. Oh, look, I have a really high 'esteem level', that just made my day......  Insane

Sorry, but you're once again going to alienate a good portion of the present users with these childish (and there really isn't any other word) little add-ons.

I enjoy the site tremendously, and I am sorry if I come across as a little blunt, but that's only because I'm angry at the way things are changing around here...the Non-Aviation forum used to be an interesting place, yet now its just a joke...have you seen the threads there lately? This isn't just my opinion, I've had the pleasure of meeting another A.Net user 'for real', and he was considering just going into tech/ops, having long abandoned Non-Av and wondering about Civil Av.

Just please, think carefully about these changes, that's all I ask.

Popularity contest: silly or not, it's clearly what the majority of (read: young) users here want and what they set their lives around. It's all part of growing up. Some of us have long since outgrown such petty things, and the rest will eventually.

I don't think that Johan is doing anything wrong. He's just delivering what the Market wants. Since this site is probably 75% under 21, then why not? You know "don't give 'em peanuts if they want popcorn".

Does it have something to do with the number of posts made times the number of respected users divided by 100?

Johan is right about doing something to increase the posts' quality.
But why reinvent the wheel? the http://slashdot.org model is unbeatable; the users decide! Good post, good ratings, meta moderated to prevent abuse.
The esteem level won't go anywhere, it has (and probably is) also based on the number of posts, the rating of the thread they're in and so on, but it won't help filtering a bad post from a good user and a good post from a bad user.

My .02$!

I'm very curious to hear what it's all about.
It has to be pretty complicated as it seems that it doesn't matter by how many people you are respected or how many you do respect.
There are members with a long list and they have a level of 0 whilst others have it pretty mucht he other way round.

28 eh ? How low.

Maybe when Johan gets off the running machine he will tell us.

Me thinks it's got to do with the amount of respected users you have. And then it also depends on the rating that your respected users have.

Am I the closest? Thought so.
