Idea: Boolean Combination Searches *from* Results

Sun Apr 04, 2004 6:21 am

I have been mulling this idea for a while now. It came up from the fact that sometimes I feel like doing very specific searches in the database can be somewhat limiting, cumbersome, or just plain slow. So I came up with the following idea to search using Boolean, or cross-data, searches using small check-boxes in the image search results as opposed to having to return to the "New Search" page.

I've mocked it up to aid in visualizing. I've used one of my own images as an example.

Say you see this image while perusing the new additions to the DB:

Now imagine you want to see all images shot by this particular photographer, at this particular location, of this particular airline. As it now stands, you'd have to go back to the Search page and use the drop down lists and in some cases fill in the blank field. But what if there were small little check boxes next to each variable that you could select and search right from the image? It might look something like this:

This would immediately yield all photos in the DB that match the Boolean criteria.

Or maybe you just want to see all UPS aircraft shot at BFI:

Or all UPS 767s:

Basically, you'd check off what you want and click the small "Search New Combo" button and off you go. You could do cross-data searches with any of the available variables (i.e: Reg#, CN#, Photographer, etc.). It seems like it wouldn't be terribly hard to code as it would just be a user interface issue and doesn't require a lot of graphic support. I think it would greatly expand the use of the A.net search engine and streamline queries.

What do you all think? Would this be something you'd like and use?

That is a very goog idea and would like to see it! I agree with the hassle of the looooooooooooooooooooooooong searches.

Maybe Johan can make this work?

Absolutely. I didn't think it could be this simple though. I liked the 'trial' search feature Johan had implemented a while ago for a brief period of time, where you'd enter information into the keyword box and it would yeild similar results. It was much more comprehensive, as typing in "Brian Futterman"+"JFK" would fetch all my Kennedy shots, and I wouldn't have to run through the drop down menus.

The Boolean interface is much more user friendly, though. However, it's extra redundancy on top of the menus. If I had to choose, I'd go for this (you'd still need the menus, though).
What the FUTT?

Of course. This idea would be supplemental. It's not meant to supplant the "Search" page.

It would just make searching MUCH faster.

Great idea Bill. Just the other day I wanted to perform a search that would have been very easy if this were implemented. How do we make sure Johan sees this, to at least be made aware of Bill's suggestion?

Good idea ExitRow, those checkboxes would screw up the layout though as they are impossible to make that small. Also, your "Search New Combo" button is located where the "Buy print" link currently is located.

Anyway, the basic idea is very good and I've worked with that as base for the new "Cross data Search" (is that a good name to express what it does?) link you'll find at the bottom left of all entries. If you click the link you'll get the same functionality as you suggested.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Johan

Hmmm...

The js popup window is blank for me.

Browsing with MS IE 5.2 for Mac OS X.

Don't tell me I won't be able to use my own idea!  Crying

Darn. Getting any Javascript errors or similar? Any clues at all what might be wrong? It's hard for me to test scripts on Mac's when I don't own one.

No error messages per se. The js window opens and it's blank. When I view source, all the code's there, it just doesn't show up in the table. Also, when the window first opens, the page momentarily reads "Buy Print." (I am assuming you cannibalized the code from the print purchase popup.)

Maybe there's some stray code there that's hiding the text?

Yes, but there's nothing left of the text from "Buy Print" at all. Try reloading the page with Ctrl-R or the Mac equivalent. If that doesn't do it, remove your history files etc. I suspect your problem might be caused by an old version of this document saved in your browser.

Nope. Still blank:

I cleared my browser history and also hit "Shift+R" for a clean Refresh.

Still the same blank popup.

Note: The page title simply reads "Buy" momentarily before switching over to "Cross Data Search." (Not "Buy Print" like I stated earlier. My mistake.)

Oh wait! It's a table issue.

I scrolled to the right and all the fields and checkboxes are crammed into narrow columns to the right.

I see it now, but as is it's relatively unreadable and unusable.

Sorry, I've checked and double-checked the html syntax and it should be ok. It does look like a simple table thing where a colspan is misplaced or similar but I just cannot find anything wrong. Weird.

Anyone else on a Mac experiencing similar problems?

William, click on this link:

Does it look better now when opened in a full sized window?

Thanks,

Johan,
Looks perfect full size. And the table maintains it's proper proportions when I manually resize it as well. (OpenWindow pixel width/heighth problem maybe?)

I know user "Klaus" is a Mac guy and he's very articulate (as most Mac users are  Big grin ). Maybe he could help as well.

william

Edit: It's working fine now. Thanks!

Looks great in Safari v.125.1 here. I love the idea! It should make things much faster in the searching department. Thanks for the innovation and execution guys.

Hej Johan,
fantastic new feature this "Cross Data Search" - THANKS !

I have two further ideas/improvements ...
Is it possible to add also in addition the "Generic Aircraft type" in the "Cross Data Search" - then it would be also possible to search eg. for ALL B747's form a certain airport or photographer

Is it possible to add the links to "Cross Data Search" and "Buy a print of this Photo" also in the medium and large version of a photo. Would be very good and helpfull, because when you for example come from a "tumbnails=noinfo" search (Display photos only - a function I like very much) or also from a link to a single photo you do NOT have "Buy a print" and "Cross Data Search" functions.

Thanks

Glad to see your idea was implemented Bill, I already used it. I don't care for small popup windows, but the usefulness far outweighs anything else. Can't believe how fast this feature was added as well.

Well done Bill and Johan!

Would it be possible to break up the "CATEGORY" section—each having their own checkbox? As it now stands, all are bunched together which is somewhat restrictive.
