Panoramics Revisited: Widelux Photos Okay?

Well, almost exactly two years ago, I asked about uploading panoramics:

Back then, I wanted a Panon 35mm Widelux badly . Well, last week, I finally got a MINT F7 on ebay. This thing is FUN. I took a roll of Fuji Superia 400 down to the Museum of Flight to christen it.













For those unfamiliar with Widelux, it's NOT a stitched or cropped panoramic. It's what is called a "Swing Lens" panoramic camera. A cylinder with a panning, 26mm lens rotates 140 deg. from left to right, exposing 24mm x 59mm (1"x2 1/3") of film. (Remember that stuff?) The distortion in the images is unique to swing lenses and I love it.

So my question is, can I upload these? (Not these images specifically, but this format in the future.) I figure I'd keep them constrained to 1200 pxls wide to avoid needless scrolling and a file size under the 1 MB cap.

If panoramics are able to be uplaoded then i will bump up a Hasselblad X-PanII on my list of things to buy! I love pano's!

How much was this cam? They look cool to play with!

Wideluxes range from $600-$1500 USD. They stopped making them in the mid 80s I believe so the key is getting one in good shape. They take no batteries. It's all kinetic. When you advance the film, you are also winding a coil that will ultimately turns the swing lens ont he subsequent shutter release. They are well made, but if not cared for properly, they get fickle. Mine is a mint estate sale specimen. I couldn't believe what good condition it was in. No wear, no brassing, nothing. I don't think it was ever used.

I have a roll of Velvia I am itching to use, but being Seattle... I may not get the opportunity til April.  Smile

the problem is, as I see it, the aspect ratio. If we allow these types of shots in (I think they are great) then people will start cropping their pictures at 1600 x 700 and complaining when they get rejected for badsize. The biggest challenege here is when we make allowances for "special cases" then people come in here and complain that others are being treated unfairly.

Royal,

I wouldn't upload any bigger than 1200x x XXXh. (Probably 1200x480.)

I still think A.net should have a maximum width of 1200 pxls. 1600 is pointless unless you REALLY want people to steal your shots for print.

1600 is helpful for the people who feel they have something to prove. Usually new photogs, people with lesser equipment, and/or they aren't good photographers.

I believe that the rules should be amended to say that "For special panoramic pictures, an aspect ratio of less than 3:2 is acceptable,"

But that's just me.

I think if you want to talk to Johan, you should either email him directly, which is probably the easiest option, or post a thread in the site related forum which he does visit fairly frequently. Or just upload one to try! Big grin

I love those shots, and they should be accepted no questions asked! Since it's a different type of camera alltogether, the rules about sizes shouldn't really apply. That's just my thought though  Smile.

If you can't upload, them, please post them somewhere else, and tell us where!

Call me delusional, but I like to think Johan frequents this forum seeing as photography is an integral reason for the success of this site.

But I will admit, I'd have a better chance of getting a quick response if I posted a thread in Site Related labeled:

"What happened to < username >?"

or,

"Johan, there's a typo on the 13th line of the upload FAQ page!"
