New Quick View Feature

Thu Mar 02, 2006 12:23 pm

Hi all,

A new feature has been added to the forum. You'll noticed a small blue icon beside each topic on the forum index pages. Click on it and you'll get a preview of the post. Click again on the icon and the preview closes.

The preview shows an exact copy of the post, including any images and other graphics. There's a "View last reply" link that will give you a quick view of the last reply to the thread.

You must have Javascript enabled in your relatively new browser for this feature to work.

If it does not work for you, please:

1) Give me a detailed explanation of the problem (what happens when you click the icon?).
2) Tell me the browser and browser version you're using.
3) Tell me why you can't use Internet Explorer or Firefox like the rest of us  Wink

Cheers,
Johan

Perhaps a little "X" in the upper right hand corner of each Quick View box might be a good idea. I think it's just natural to look in the uper right hand corner of a dialog box to close it.

Cool feature though.  Smile

Heh. It works great with Safari 1.3.2.

The only thing I see is that I have to keep my browser window open wider to view the whole excerpt, or scroll to the right. When using a laptop, I usually size my window to just the inside borders of the page to preserve screen real estate, and the excerpt bleeds out into the ad on the right.

I'm using Opera and new feature works there without problems. Not a bad idea. Now, I do have problems with photo search engine which is extremely slow (OK, I'm using dial-up bit it is stil slower than it used to be). Can that be fixed?

It should definitely not do that. It should only cover the table with forum info, not extend outside that. I'll have to check it again in Safari.

As said above, Safari works great Version 2.0.3 (417.8). I think the icon would be better placed next to the folder on the left column. I, along with some others above, run a browser window at about 800px wide instead of maximizing it to 1024px. With the quick view in its current location, it spills beyond that typical 800px page width.

Great feature.

-TJ

Edit: The above appears to be adjusted to stick within the table now. Works perfectly.

I considered that initially but do not want the window to cover the list of topics. You should be able scan the list of topics at the same time as you open and close Quick view windows.

I have decreased the size of the quick view window so that it does not bleed outside the forum table, at least not on my Mac & Safari.

I think your motivation to keep it to the right is good. Your current implementation is flawless. Again great feature. I look forward to other things up your sleeve.

A REALLY GREAT new feature! However...three very minor points:

1) If one invokes QV on a thread near the bottom of screen, it doesn't show within current window. One has to scroll down to see it. Could QV be forced to stay 100% visible within limits of current window? (assuming window is same or larger than size req)

2) After using it, my "Hot" treads don't have any motion...the flames stay fixed...on IE 6...refreshing forum pages restarts the flames.

3) Publicize it a bit more: I have Non-av bookmarked and saw these blue things on last time in...had to come to Site Related to find out what it was all about...I'd put a "Hot" locked thread in SR pointing to this one for a few days to help advertise it.

I know, that's not ideal. My programming knowledge of Javascript (which I've written this in) is somewhat limited though and I really don't know how something like that would be accomplished. I'll add it if I happen to come across a solution.

Quoting J_Hallgren (Reply 19):

Yes, I've noticed that too. No solution here either I'm afraid.

That I can do. There's now a link to this discussion from the top of the index page of every forum. I'll remove it in a day or two.

Johan

That is a great feature.

Quoting Administrator (Thread starter):
There's a "View last reply" link that will give you a quick view of the last reply to the thread.

Now, when you click on "View last reply", last reply shows up and there you still have this "View last reply" link, that does nothing. How about changing that link back and forth from "View last reply" to "View threadstarter" and make it switch between these posts?

Not much of an addition, but that would make this feature complete, I think.

1) When I click on the icon it turns from a folded peice of paper into an unfolded peice of paper. Thats it.
2) Opera 7.54, Build 3865 Java runtime 1.5
3) IE - You have to be kidding! Firefox - you have to be really kidding!!!!!!!!!!!
4) Possibley relevent info. Entering any thread in any forum I get the Java runtime error "[CPAINT Error] Could not create connection object" I click OK and then the thread loads OK. Started happening about 2-3 weeks ago.

Please - please - take out this improvement!

It was bad enough before when people responded to a thread after only having read the last post.

Quite often, what they raised had been discussed at some length in a thread, but at least there used to be the chance that a few people had read more than the last post.

Now - it's too easy. It will make people even lazier and will make many, many posts redundant.

The technology may be terrific. The result is awful

cheers
