Country Flags On A.Net

Wed Jun 21, 2006 5:23 am

I have noticed something about the flags on A.Net, particularly The United Kingdom. Sometimes I see the flag and it is white two red lines, one horizontally and one vertically. The other one I have seen for The U.K. is a black flag with two white stripes, one from corner to corner in the shape of a "X".  confused  Is this to represent the different areas of The U.K.? Why isn't The Union Jack used for everyone?

Thanks

David

Long story short, the Scots wanted their own flag, so now there is a flag for each member of the UK.

I agree! It's stupid. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are not self-governing nations. Besides, the Union Jack looks better then the rest of the flags.

That'd be cool! Unfortunately there is no Scandinavian flag, whereas the Union Jack has been around for a loooooooong time. Besides, all the Scandinavian countries are self-governing countries.

Also, we already have an airline which represents both Denmark, Norway and Sweden. I don't mind. I think it is great!

Considering a Jack is something exclusively used on maritime vessels, I don't see how anyone on this site could use a Union Jack on the forums.

Mr. Nitpick  Wink is just pointing out the correct name is "Union Flag", not "Union Jack" when it's not on a ship.

Indeed it is, if you read the description behind the flags of the UK regions, you'll see the following in the case of England:

Meh, what's the big deal with the flags? If the Scots, Welsh, English and Northern Irish got their own flag and can choose between those and the Union Jack, so be it.

That being said, where's my flag, the flag of the German state of Hamburg?  Wink j/k

The UK is already cheating by having four national football teams (Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England), which gives them 4 chances of winning the world cup for one country (not that that helps, of course...) and more spots than reasonable in the Champions League. And now, on top of all that, they have 4 flags plus a Union Jack on Airliners.net? Oh My God, what's next! Four spots in the Eurovision Song Festival? Help!

More seriously, does anyone really have a problem? After all the 'countries' that make up the UK are quite well-known (as opposed to, say, the regions of Belgium, the Länder of Germany, the cantons of Switzerland, the states of the US...).

For your information, and without making any comment on whether flags should or shouldn't be included, since this really has been discussed to death, each state of Australia, each state of the USA and each province of Canada has its own parliament/legislature. I am not familiar enough with other federal countries to comment, although most federal systems would have a similar set up of state/province and federal parliaments/legislatures.

I've been whingeing and whining for ages about no Manx flag. And the question of a Scottish passport spurred me to action.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y137/skiddyiom/Passport_DSC_6986.jpg

Notice it does not say "United Kingdom"? Notice the specific "Isle of Man"? Now, when the Scots, Welsh and Ulstermen get their own passports, then I'll agree with their different flags. As well as all the German Lander's, US States etc etc! Big grin

This is my opinion , you might not like it but hey:

I'm a resident of the United Kingdom, but I LIVE in England, England is just a name, like a state if you wish, nothing more than a name to me.
People just get seem obsessive with wanting their own identity, why don't Cornwall have their own flag ?, or their own passport, or in fact, why don't the place who claim they are part or England, but not of England have their own identity ?, because it would just become ridiculous, at the end of the day, you're a resident of the U.K , no matter how you put it, no matter whether you're on the Isle of man or the Isle of Dogs, that's what you are,as I said, people are becoming obsessive to having their own identity, oh, and by the way, I only use the England flag because it's there to use.

Pray tell why an independant part of the British isles should NOT have their own passport? We have our own currency which cannot be used in the UK, parliament (not associated with the United Kingdom) and local government. Apart from being a dependancy, like the Falklands, Gibraltar and the Channel Islands, we are nothing to do with the United Kingdom.

And we are an associate member of the European Union, not a full member.

So, explain yourself boy, before the wrath of Mannannan descends on you and you come out in a rash!!  mad
