Join Our Crew As A Comment Screener!

Thu Jul 06, 2006 11:54 pm

Hi all,

When a visitor rates a photo by clicking on one of the stars below a photo (like on this page: https://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=1067425) they have the option to leave a comment explaining why they rate the photo as they do. Such comments are screened by Airliners.net crew before they are added to the photo page.

So far, people from other parts of the crew have been screening comments when time permits. But as the number of comments submitted are increasing, we are looking for two or three people dedicated on screening photo comments.

  • You should have a lot of free time on your hands. Screening the comments is not difficult as long as you keep at it daily. If you leave it for a few days, the queue of waiting comments will be enormous. It is therefore important that you have the time to go through the comments daily. I estimate that about 200-400 new comments are added daily.

  • You should be thorough. Vulgar and obscene comments are submitted daily and it is your job to see to that such comments never reach the site.

  • There are certain rules guiding what comments should be allowed and what shouldn't. You should be able to abide to those rules in your screening.

  • We expect you to be in it for the long run. Training new comment screeners will be a lot of work and if you can show me that you intend to stay for long, you'll have a definite advantage.

That's it! In return for your work you will get a crew account on Airliners.net (which is like a free First Class account with some additional perks).

Screening comments can be a great deal of fun. It's often very interesting to read through what people have to say about the photos. It can be overwhelming if the comment queue is very long though and that is why it is important to screen comments daily.

If you're interested, contact me at [email protected] and include detailed info on how you will cope with the four requirements above.

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Kind Regards,
Johan Lundgren

Once a year the ANET jet pics you up at your local airport and flys you to Sweden for the annual crew picnic. Last year it got out of hand when some of the crew got a little too drunk, this year we all have to sign a release form.

Go guys, send your applications and help us poor comment screeners out! Big grin

Currently is comment screening the "second A.net job" for all of us comment screeners, our "main A.net job" is moderator, photo screener, or database admin and these main jobs usually take a lot of time so we don't have much time to screen comments beside.

I am glad to see that we get support very soon!  cheerful

How about making it a crew of about 7-10 people instead? The database is growing and I think that it does have to be ready as there are more and more comments. That way, with 30 to screen everyday it would take only a few minutes and it would certainly be more efficient! How about that? I would apply immediately!

Best regards

Photo comment screening is a nice compliment to my moderating duties. An hour here and there when I am taking a break from my mod duties is a nice way to relax but still contribute to the site.

I look forward to working with the new crew members

Hey Johan!
Great Idea, but I have a few questions.
1) What are the additional perks...because i'm looking for a part time job, but if I don't get paid I'd need to not send a resume.
2) I haven't been a member very long and I don't have a respect rating yet, does that matter?
3) How long does it take to screen 200 comments? In combination with school, a job (depending on the answer to #1) and my necessary A.net browsing time, I won't have more than an hour a day...

Thanks for any input!

As stated above, you don't get paid. It's 100% volunteer work. You get paid by being given free first class member privileges, etc.

Quoting ATCme (Reply 24):
2) I haven't been a member very long and I don't have a respect rating yet, does that matter?

I'm sure that's not really important, although it would give you some extra points when his search is narrowed down. If you, and JumboJim were to both write a really great convincing speech, and Johan had to choose between either of you. I'm sure he'd go with JumboJim because he is a more recognized and reliable figure (just going by RR). However, that shouldn't detour you.

This would most likely depend on how fast of a reader you are. How long do you think it might take you to read about 200 sentences? The answer to that question would be the answer to yours!  Wink

Hi guys,

Thanks all for your interest!

The only stuff that matters are the four points above, nothing else. It doesn't matter how old you are, what your respect rating is or anything like that.

I will select two or three based on the emails I get. I'll send the selected usernames to the crew to get their views and possible objections. If all is ok then they are hired. I'll give you the result within a week or so.

Regards,
Johan

But, I'll bear it in mind and maybe if a vacancy arises in the future I may apply.

One question, as far as profanity, would it be zero-tolerence or would something like "that's a damn nice photo" fly?

We do try to stay fairly strict on it, given that it is viewed by everyone who opens the photo. The one you suggested would probably make it though, but that would be the limit.

I'd consult the rules and/or a crew member for a definitive answer on that. There is training for this post, so rest assured that lucky someone won't just be sent off to start working.

Hello Johan. I have already sent one email to you, regarding this position. After I sent it, I realized I could have been a bit more detailed. I tried sending another one, but for some reason, I don't think it worked. Maybe something to do with the severs moving. I was just wondering if you recieved the 2nd email from me or not? If not, maybe I could send it to you by PM. Sorry for posting this is the forum. Normally I would just email you, but obviously, I can't do that  Wink

Given the past weeks activities at Airliners.net HQ with the server move and such, I'm pretty sure Johan and Henks have been swamped up to their eyeballs in cable's, giant mugs of coffee and photographs! Oh and the Odd PC Tower Big grin

I'm sure the decision will be made when Johan can round up all the crew who are associated with the job(s) in question to ask for their views and comments on Johans selected usernames. And the decision will be made final, and publicly thereafter.
