Whats With New Keywords Popping Up In Threads

Tue Aug 07, 2007 3:05 am

why do certain words become double underlined, gold and lead to yet another pop-up from "Microsoft Live Search?

is this what we have to look forward to in the future???

I don’t like it one bit. Big thumbs down.... looks like the forums demise has begun. Wonder how long it will take for the photo database to go down the same route.

I am glad I waited to see how the changes come and affect us and as a long time user of Airliners.Net it is a sad sight to see a company come and rip up what has been made here and destroy the forums full of advertisements to make them money everywhere you look.

Side bar adverts I agree with...but putting unwanted links and advertisements WITHIN a post is down right ridiculous.

Ok, sorry guys. They shouldn't be showing up for logged in members at all. Please bear with me while I fix this - it shouldn't take too long.

Because its intermittent - it may be something to do with the caching that the forums use to keep things speedy...

I'll update this thread when I'm done...

Thanks,

Ok,

I've updated the code to use the same membership checks as other parts of the site.

BAPILOT2B - if you wouldn't mind, could you check and see if you are still getting the issue?

I'm not seeing these adverts now on any level of membership.

Thanks for the feedback,

Bad use of english on my part there. What I meant was one link would be on the main post and then every few replies another in the post. Every 2 or 3 posts I think.

At the top of the page it says I'm signed in, but the words "airline" and "airlines" popup ads when you mouseover them. It is annoying and ugly.

Hi all,

The underline words that pop up (ads) were at first a glitch that Matthew was working on but then became an ad style we are trying out. We are trying to use non-evasive ads yet some ads are going to be there but not without some benefit. All First Class Members and Premium Members should not be receiving ads. We are sorry for the inconvenience and intrusion but we are trying to be sensitive by not overdoing it by any means. Hopefully most of you understand that ads and membership dues is what fuels the site and allows us to make improvements, so this is not without benefit to the site as a whole.

We are working just as diligently on bringing a whole bunch of new features to you, for registered, First Class and Premium members. I’m more than willing to explain to you as much as needed when and what we are doing.

If you are a premium member and are still getting key word pop up ads, please let me know asap and we'll work to fix it today. As of now, there is supposed to be no pop up ads for Premium and First Class memberships. Please let me know.

Thanks for your support.

They seem to be pretty rare, so this isn't a complaint, rather an advisory.

I've just come across them for the first time, and yes I'm logged in. Is this the exciting future we were promised?

The bastard things somehow managed to disable Firebug, so I'll have to figure out how to disable them the hard way. Or maybe I'll just install Adblock and be done with it, and you can whistle for your revenue.

Quoting Deeplight (Reply 23):

Fair enough - and this is the reason why I don't block (non-Flash) ads. But you can only push that so far, and these cross the line.

It's already bad enough having ads from *.tribalfusion.com stalling page loads for five seconds at a time, without adding this crap on top. The sole reason I have Flashblock installed is because of an ad on a.net - nothing like having Crazy Frog suddenly blare out of your PC to get your boss's attention. Thanks a lot for that - really considerate.

Do not trifle with your users. This user, for one, will not stand for it.

Hi guys/crew:

You asked us to notify you if the ads came back - I thought I'd chime in and let you know that I'm seeing these as well while logged in.

Good luck on tracking down the issue... I work in IT myself, so I understand how tricky issues like this can be. To the rest of you guys criticizing the crew: I feel the need to defend them here, because this is extremely complex software they're working with, and optimizing it properly for a site of this size is difficult work. What might work one day/week might stop working due to whatever reason behind the scenes on the server - and getting a permanent fix in place is often a tricky task, as what seems permanent may not be. Software is much more fickle these days than it used to be in the 90s...

I thought it was either a virus (and spent 2 hours with anti-virus proggies) or some new MS search engine browser add on (with the last hour checking all the internet explorer settings)

Needless to say, I am a little upset.

Very poor advertising idea in my opinion, to make visitors think their browser has been hijacked.

Hi all,

The highlighted links are not being displayed to First Class or grandfathered members but will be displayed to all others. We are sorry for the inconvenience this causes and hope that this is not a permanent fixture. Along with these ads will be additional site benefits which will be announced in the forums soon and overall site speeds will be increasing within the next month. We are working hard to bring you a top-notch site and do apologize for some of the small inconveniences. We look forward to releasing new features and benefits of airliners.net within the coming months.

If this is what we have to look forward to, crap!

The only terms I can find for this new advertising method are:

Crass
Obnoxious
Annoying
and several other terms unfit for mixed company.

Not happy at all.

I would much rather not have any benefits that this new and invasive advertising method might provide. You do not create a beautiful woman by dressing her up like a cheap whore.

Where do I go to get the last 3 hours of my life back?

I will certrainly not patronize these advertisers.

Thank you for your support,

Deep Light

so wait, premium members are going to have to see these adds?

You can disable these obnoxious Vibrant Media mouse over adverts.

Just mouse over one of the adverts to let the box pop up. Click on the ? what's this? at the top right of the pop up box. This will open up a new page. Scroll down to the very bottom of that page to the last link and click on that link. This will download a cookie that will disable all the double underlines on a particular site (such as Airliners.net).

The forums have been mostly free of this for me when logged in, however some did pop up in the first post in this thread: CO 46 To AMS From Terminal C? (by St530 Aug 23 2007 in Civil Aviation)

Same here. I see the ads in that thread too. "Airline" seems to be a bad word now.

This should be disabled for premium and grandfathered members...

All First Class Members and Premium Members should not be receiving ads.
