Non-av - Do Not Post In Here Unless...

Fri Dec 14, 2007 5:20 am

"Do not post in here unless you are capable of expressing yourself in a civilized manner. Our rules will be strictly applied and users banned permanently and without warning if they violate them."

I am quite weak in grammar, however after looking at this, I feel on the second sentence, isn't there one too many and?

Also, I realized this when I wasn't checked-in, so is it necessary to show it to those who aren't even logged in/visitors

Nope, it's merely missing two commas.

Yes, that sounds much better.

Is there even a need to show it, when people aren't logged in/to visitors?

It's a hold-over from when things in the forum were much less settled than today.

We could probably get rid of it altogether at this point.

 Yeah sure

Did we really need to devote an entire thread to a missing comma?

That isn't entirely correct either.

"Our rules will be strictly applied" - Future Tense

"and users banned permanently" - Past Tense

It should read - "Our rules will be strictly applied and users will be permanently banned without warning if they violate them."

Your modified version is correct, but so was the original. The sentence as it currently written on the board is completely, 100% correct - effectively it is saying that users will be banned [both] permanently AND without warning if.... No need for commas, no need for removing an 'and'.

What you say about about that being the 'past tense' is incorrect. The 'will be' is implied by the fact that it was written earlier in the sentence.

Now I think we can close this thread  Smile

Well, if we're going to devote a thread to something so stupid and useless, lets at least give the grammar book some credit, eh?

I'm sorry if you thought it was stupid and useless, but I always thought that if grammar is wrong in any website, it says alot about the website and company in question. For example, if an airline's website has even a slight grammatical mistake than I think of that in a bad light, and if someone new to anet sees that, I thought they may also have a negative impression of this.

I'm sorry if you thought it is stupid and useless.

I think the discussion is over, and as someone else has already mentioned, it can be closed now

Dont get me wrong, your observations are not stupid and useless, but making a thread about it is.

Grammatical errors happen every second, and if one spent their life trying to find and correct all of them it would consume their entire life and they would not have time to eat and drink and play and sleep

Thanks for your observations, and it is good that you have suggested a correction, but IMHO, it might be best to just email one of the admin directly instead of making a thread about it.

Is there not some gap between that warning and the description of the non-av forum?

https://www.airliners.net/discussions/

"Non-Aviation [ 1,711,409 posts with 492 new during last 24 hours ]
This forum is for topics not related to aviation. It can be anything really, reflections on why you think Microsoft is a cool company to why you'll never buy a Nissan. Topics tend to be rather controversial in here and discussions can be heated. You've been warned."

To me this says it's more or less "no hold barred" and you're on your own to not be offended by what you might see here. Maybe it should be changed because the enforced standard is somewhat different that what the description might lead one to believe.
