DM grants mod access to developers because of some useful connections to back-end features on the forum software beyond a standard forum/crew account.

They are not actually moderating the discussion forums

Those are Demand Media-related folks who in the course of their work, need access to the moderator functions from time to time (Pretty much technical and code reasons). I am assuming that way the crew access permissions are set up, when someone is given the access privileges of a crew group, they are automatically given the crew title. The moderator crew as it stood prior to the change in ownership is still the same group of moderators. These two additions are in name only.
