Why Is There No 'send Instant Message' Button?

Tue Mar 11, 2008 4:39 pm

Why do some peoples profiles not have a 'send instant message' button on them? Hamlet69 is one and The777man is another. I'm trying to get back in contact with hamlet69 after some recent communication but clicking the 'reply' button in my 'total history' does not send a message.

Here's the short and sweet answer:

Has "Send Instant Message" Button in their profile:

Crew
First Class Members
Premium Members

Does not have "Send Instant Message" Button in their profile:

Grandfathered Members
Photographer Accounts

There is a way to send grandfathered members (both of the members you mentioned are grandfathered members) instant messages. Find one of their posts and use the "Send Instant Message" button in the box for their post.

Why do grandfathered members not have the instant messenger button in profiles? This is just inconsistant and confusing?

I believe we also dont see a "view IM history" button when viewing our own profiles?

Thank you. Interesting - I didn't know that.

It's the way the software and coding was written, as IMs were originally a perk for First Class members (and later Premium Members) and I guess when they extended the IM system to the Grandfathered Members they never went back and edited the code for Grandfathered Members. Hopefully this may be something addressed down the road with some software and code updates.

Anyone can review their own PM history by bookmarking the following link (and clicking on it) while logged into your own a.net account. This link will take you to your PM history:

I keep having to use that but I think that most members get some kind of alert / flashy thing to notify them of a new message. I don't get that  Sad
