RE: New Homepage

Thu May 29, 2008 8:40 pm

Well, the new homepage is up now. This has definetely changed the look of a.net; I guess we´ll have to adapt to it.

Each time the mouse is placed over the letters in the forums, all the words get underlined. Just as if they were a hyperlink. It would be nice to get that fixed.

I would also like to mention the order in which the Forums are places on the "Forums" list. For example, I somehow, I miss having "Aviation Polls and Prefers" second. We now get Military Aviation second, a forum a personally believe should be way down the list, and not in such a high place.

I also miss the old "Aviation" and "Non aviation" forum classification.

Regards,

PS: "Check spelling" isn´t working either. Sorry for any spelling mistakes I may have.

It appears DM has Vista-fied or beloved homepage. I'm sure in time we'll all get used to it. But it's very cluttered and fairly ugly. Oh well - nothing I can do but complain, which will get us nowhere.

Bring back the old one.

The new front page is just to messy. Difficult to find your way around.

The underlining of all text in the forum is just crazy...and so wrong

I feel that the new site design looks cheap and nasty. The old design was subtle and looked much more professional. Now it looks like a 12 year old designed it. The colour choosing idea adds little value (it was fine with just blue!) and the frontpage is too cluttered into the top part with all the pictures, it looked better with the pictures down the sides like previously. Also as a person with poor eyesight, I find the website much more difficult to navigate around. Sorry about the negativity, but in general I feel that the old design was much better.

There seems to be a problem. I can no longer quote only part of a forum reply when making a posting. As soon as I move my cursor over a forum message the entire thing is underlined, including all the headings etc. It won't let me only highlight and quote one or two lines or a few words.

And when I remove the cursor from the message it takes several seconds before the underscoring disappears.

And finally, when I click "Preview the Post" all the text becomes centered, not left aligned.

The message you were about to post is too short and probably not of any higher value to the topic at hand. You should think long and hard before posting a message in this forum and make it detailed and a valuable addition to the topic discussed.

Also, apart from the underlining of posts when putting the mouse over them which I'm also experiencing, the site is very slow. I'm on a broadband connection and even so, my browser appears like it's going to crash anytime with this new design. I suspect that the new format has much more code and the previous format, which makes it "heavier" than before.

And finally, when the preview of my post is shown before submitting it, it all appears centre-justifed again.

Hate to be a naysayer, but this is a graphics design mess! Did you use the services of a trained graphic designer to set up the new space?

1. There is little to none background, or unused space, to assist eye flow across the page. Every inch of the site is covered!

2. Boxes, or panels, or whatever you want to call them appear to be different sizes and to be placed willy nilly wherever they fit. In order to orient the eye, there must be some sense of balance. Also, similar components (panels) must be of similar size and look in order to emphasize their conceptual commonality. For example, you've got photos that appear to be randomly placed across the page. These are not only photos but entrances into departments. But that isn't immediately communicated.

3. There is no constant visual element to anchor the page and to help you orient yourself to the rest of the page. The NW 747 banner at the top doesn't cut it. In the old page, the center section, which contained recent postings, news, etc., functioned as the "you are here" that helped you know where you were so that you could find the department you wished to go to. Now we've got no focal point. Just text and pictures in no particular order.

Okeydokey, so I see the new homepage and I'm lost !

Some of the scaled down photos areoversharpened, some look like beefed up pixels.
and
How do I get to the My Photos sections.

I've read somwhere that a webpage should be accessible within three clicks of a mouse. Here, I think a map is needed. It looks like it's unfinished. I wish the designers best of luck, but trhe whole thing looks like new frontpage + old structure with different ackground colour.

There are my first impressions.

please change it back, get rid of it, its awful. it looks tacky, cheap and nasty, and why are the forums are underlined?? i don't like it when people try and fix things that are not broken. it was fine they way it was, and I certainly do not see how the new frontpage can be of any commercial benefit. To begin with there is LESS content on it, and I don't think there is any more advertising even. One of the reasons Airliners.net is fantastic and so popular, is it is reliable and easy to use. This is bad news, I hope the rest of the site does not go like this. Please fix the forums too so they are not underlined when you hover over the words!!!

"Cheap and nasty" just about sums it up. I would add ''crude and tasteless". The new design will not add popularity to the site. The old design had style and, if anything, looked finished. This one looks like bits and pieces thrown together. Who'll tell me what the "change colour" option is for? The colours are in total discord as it is, the option looks like a toy for a six year old. All up, quite a bit of a shock, really.

Changing for the sake of changing is never a good idea.  Sad Apart from the bugs still present, I find this presentation a lot more confusing and less "immediate" (i.e. "photographers choice" and "top of the last 24 hours"). In addition, I find a bad idea to have a white background for the thumbnails, which is contrary to most photo editing software which have nowadays a dark background.  thumbsdown

Ok, I've just looked at the front page (my criticisms up until now have been purely forum page orientated).

1. The scrolling news story ticker in the middle column has a font that makes it look out of focus on IE 7, but it looks OK in Firefox

2. The 'Top Rated Phots' photo is pixelated to hell and back, regardless of what photo is shown (at first I thouhgt it was the photo)

3. The 'Top of the last 24 hours' photos are badly scaled, jaggies and jpeg artifacts abound

4. The 'Photo Index' and 'Aircraft Data and History' section headers are not the same styling as the other section headers

5. The page fails W3C validation with 5803 errors, including the fact that its sending corrupt data as UTF8 and therefor should not be sending that character coding

6. Your HTML is seriously seriously fucked:

<select name="page_limit">
<option value="6">6/Page

That is *not* valid HTML, infact I am not sure what the hell that is! You dont close an option tag using /Page, you close it with </option>. Because you do not, the rest of the options in that list are invalid.

7. You are missing alt tags on images all over the place - since you (Demand Media) are based in the US, this is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Other than that, the front page isn't too bad - but the forum pages......

From what I can see, the only thing you're good at is deleting posts critical of how you run things. The site is barely usable with the new layout...please listen to us and get rid of it. OK, so I found Photographers' Corner in the Community section - OK, but it should be in the 'Photos' methinks.
Now when I have a look at my upload stats the whole thing looks compressed and centered correctly, but for example one line e.g. '545 photos uploaded on xx/xx/xxxx 0 currently in screening' does not take space of one line, the last two or three words are under it !

Plus the whole page is slowish now, maybe because of the traffic.

In general the top menu/bar contents look a bit messy when pointing the cursor over the particular titles. It should be in equal size bars because it doesnt look clear.

The whole header for me is like 50 pixels or more from the top - so there is empty space above it.

That's my second impression.

Ah, the site has been 'CSSed!'

One important thing to remember about sites that have been built with web-standard CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) as opposed to HTML tables (as it was before) is that while HTML table layouts force you to build within a very specific framework, CSS layouts are made up of individual elements which can be individually styled & positioned. Problems can be fixed.

Right now, all of the elements seem to have a differing look to them which confuses the eye, and sends it darting back and forth. I think the Photographers Choice, Editors Choice, Top Rated & Top Videos should be one solid column since they all have the same style. If they have to be shrunk, fine. If possible, group the ads together in one column as well.

The background color of the header should be the same background color as the rest of the page. There's no need to have it different - as just about the only non-dynamic element on the front page, there's no need to make it look like a separate element.

I understand that there is a certain information hierarchy of the site in general, and certain items need to take top billing over others. Maybe the images are just too big to do that and still keep a consistent look. Since there's not a lot of text, could the front page conceivably be converted to a 4-column layout?

Well those are my initial thoughts in looking at it. Take them or leave them!  Smile

But common when new managment takes over, just to satisfy their egos and to show that they are running the show now.

Just an example: When the Deutsche Telekom was privatised, the first thing they did was to remove all the yellow telephone boxes and to replace them with pink ones, even if they were almost new, just to show that there was a new "corporate identity".
The same happened with Condor, when it was rebranded to Thomas Cook.
Or Hapag Lloyd, when they repainted their aircraft first blue and then yellow. Totally unnecessary and expensive.
Just the boss's ego.
