New Page Layout - Bugs & Technical Problems

Fri May 30, 2008 11:30 pm

This thread is for the purpose of reporting bugs & technical problems (only) related to the new page layout of this site.

This thread's purpose is to provide one centralized location for reporting such issues. It is not for the purpose of critiquing the cosmetic aspects of the new layout. Another thread with 292 replies (now archived) provides a lot of input on the cosmetic aspects. The crew - at all levels - is very aware of that feedback.

Several bug-report threads will be archived as a way of directing those discussions into this thread.

Edit: Please understand that the staff will be reviewing this thread. Each issue identified here will not receive a specific response from a crew member. However, the issues will be reviewed by the person(s) capable of fixing them.

RE: New Page Layout - Bugs & Technical Problems

I have noticed two particular changes, and I am not sure if they are intended or accidental. Anyway, I outlined them below in orange. The text box used to span all the way to the right, underneath "Posting Help." It looks awkward the way it is now. Second, the "Forum Rules Have Changed" used to be centered. Did it possibly get switched to left justified when the everything else went from the accidental centering to left justified?

Well, I don't feel like retyping the multitude of problems I've encountered...so, I'll just quote what I've typed before:

I have the same problem.

Anyway, since I don't want to clog up the forum, I also have this problem:
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o252/neces0c9/For%20Web/newproblem.jpg

The ads are not oriented correctly.

The search bar is remembering everything I've searched for, even when google does not. It requires a complete flush and restart of Firefox.

There is a title menu that is "ghosting" over the top of the side of the page...it is not up top.

Of course there are many others, but I don't feel like typing them out right not...

I wanted to offer feedback on the design - but the thread was removed while I was replying. I have a lot of feedback on specific usability issues.

Please tell me which email address I should respond to so my feedback won't get lost and I will send it.

Regards,
Chris.

Not a bug, but I was wondering that if you could make the "Classic Blue" the default color. As it is now, the dark blue loads first, then changes itself to the classic blue, which means it takes longer to load the classic blue than the dark blue.

I guess it would only make since if the classic blue was the more popular of the two, which I believe it to be.

I can't see recent posts in several threads. The forum list tells me there are new posts but when I go to the thread I only see up to my last one.

Case in point: https://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/site_related/read.main/74476/ which according to the forum listing has the latest post "10h 34min" ago by "Kukkudrill". When I go into it the last reply I see is my own reply 12.

Here are my thoughts (only two left since the others are Ok now

- My Photos section font is way too small, hard to read and with lot's of space around
- Queue statistic page too cramped - few more empty lines would look better

I assume this is a Flash advert? This is a inherent flash problem and airliners.net can not address this, other than moving the advertisement outside of the area where the drop down menu exists, or moving the drop down menu.

The following Adobe KB document details the issue:

http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14201
http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_15523

This is a well known problem.

Will it be possible to maintain the same page color even if we close out Anet? (So when we log back in, it will be the same color as the last time we were on)

I know its a bit nit picky....

The "Right Now in the Forum" display is out of wack.

and when are we going to have a little button to insert an image? Coding it in manually is archaic.

OK, here's an odd one and it's a little difficult to explain.....

The system is saying that someone replied to this thread a few minutes ago, yet my last post is still the last post showing. I have cleared my cache and Coal's post does not show.

https://www.airliners.net/uf/536936972/phpZxAph4.jpg

Well look at that... it showed up six minutes later....

I've had many of the problems listed above, plus one more:

I tried to search for cabin photos of SQ A380s. I searched for:
*a380*
*singapore*
cabin views

Instead, I got all pictures of SQ A380s, not only cabin views.

I would prefer if you would revert back to the old search engine.

When I type in a text in the forums here, everything is normal and the cursor moves to the next line when the box is at the end (In german called Zeilenumbruch) but when I check spelling I have to move to the right to see the end of this line.

One has to go through the send us your photo link then scroll to the bottom and click the small link "my photos ".

I'm using 800x600 resolution and Firefox. Yes I know that's an archaic resolution but for now I won't have access to anything other than a stone age computer for the next few months.

When I click the thread preview button the text spills beyond the preview window´s borders. Also, every page on the website is extremely wide in this resolution. I know of several websites that have an auto-fitting feature for different resolutions (yahoo IIRC), that would be a good feature to implement or if not a button to choose the best resolution.

The site is still pretty slow for me and its a memory hog. Since the change, pages tend to hang very often, and when clicking on links, it takes about a second or two until there is a reaction.

I'm on a broadband connection, have 2 GB of RAM in my computer and use IE7 and still, the page is a memory hog, likely because of all the code put into it. Please view the below screenshot to see what I mean.

^^As you can see, A.net alone (I don't have other IE sessions open, nor do I use tabbed browsing) consumes almost 90 MB of memory, and with that consumption, on my lower spec computer at work, it's even slower.

Here's a couple I've found:

* Every time I visit the site, I have to reselect the "Classic" background color.

* The "Sign up now for photo tracker!" feature doesn't work, apparently. I click the link, enter my email address in the space provided, and I'm told "Ahh - Now I recognize you ! Your personal frontpage has been restored." But it isn't restored. I go to the home page, and it asks me to "Sign up now for photo tracker!"

Snap and most of the other problems although I can ignore most and now I know where to post, but I also know why it seemed slow, 80 megs like as not. Aha.

No the thing that had me searching for a suitable thread was:

RE: Page Titles On New Site System

Also a width problem but the text when you click on "Check Spelling"
goes out somewhere near New Zealand in my case. Very difficult to work out
what is being highlighted. Any chance of getting it "back in the box"
guys?

All of that para went to a single line.

And it is still doing it. There was a hang sometimes with the old system. AFIAcan see, the hang has disappeared, but then again it could be over near New Zealand in my case. Also the highlight is not nearly as obvious as it used to be, and I am red green colour blind, so presumably the difference is more for the more red equipped members (90% of the gents and likely 100% of ladies!).

As we know, there's a lot of feedback on the design that is more to do with the cosmetic aspects, and we do value this. If you do wish to comment, please feel free to email us at [email protected], however, as always, please keep your comments constructive.

Here is some more. First, as another user mentioned, the picture is highly pixelized. Let's get that cleared up ASAP guys. Second, what is with the RE stuff in the discussions? It has the same title, only with a RE in front of it and it takes you to the same link. Also, not to mention, those RE threads do not even exist in Civ Av.

I think there is a bug with the possibility to change color of the homepage background?

Today with a fresher mind, I have to say I honestly apologize for what I wrote here yesterday (even if it wasn't really too unpolite, and anyway I can't find this forum anymore), its true, with change there will also be some people who moan, just as I did yesterday.
One thing I would still say, if its not impossible it would be nice to give the possibility to use the old homepage, and a suggestion:
I would really like to have the homepage much darker, I really dislike all this white.. its not very airlinersish.. Anyway I have to say a lot of buttons and functions are much more easily reachable and usable, so thanks for that.

Hi guys.

How do I find the Photo Queue that shows my uploaded shots that are waiting to be screened?

Both myself & my wife have looked all over this site for it & can't find it. I guess we are both blind! I suspect the other info about my uploaded shots can be found in the same place ..... such as my Rejected Photos.

I appreciate any help in locating the photo Queue.

Thanks,

Don't know if anyone mentioned that before... When I switch to the "classic blue" while looking at the large or medium version of the photo, the photo itself is surrounded with the new default blue. It doesn't happen when using the other colours.

Hi guys.

Good Morning to you too Andy.

Thank You very much for your quick info. I navigated to that spot a few times over the last 2 days but never clicked on it because the initial shock of the new homepage appearance had frozen my mind!

Now I know where to find that stuff.

Thanks again.

Bye Bye,

Chris.  Smile

Another thing:

The copyright bar never used to show on home page photos...

Quoting Cpd (Reply 10):
I assume this is a Flash advert? This is a inherent flash problem and airliners.net can not address this, other than moving the advertisement outside of the area where the drop down menu exists, or moving the drop down menu.

The following Adobe KB document details the issue:

http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14201

This is a well known problem.

Yes, it is the flash problem. I run into it all the time when doing web design.

However, that does not change the fact that there should not be a flash banner there.
